11. Cardiovascular morbidity and metabolic signature in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : Background and objectives: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease with excess risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The treatment of RA by anti-inflammatory drugs has dramatically been improved over the resent decades. LÄS MER
12. Interactions between nutrition, obesity and the immune system
Sammanfattning : There are several links between body fat and the immune system. For example, mice lacking activity of the pro-inflammatory interleukin-(IL)-1 and IL-6 develop obesity. Conversely, obesity is associated with adipose tissue inflammation and increased risk of infection. LÄS MER
13. Expression of inflammatory and insulin signaling genes in acute and chronic stress
Sammanfattning : The acute surgical stress response induces a short-term inflammatory and insulin resistant condition, commonly producing hyperglycemia, which is strongly associated to morbidity and mortality in postsurgical patients. The chronic state of renal insufficiency, on the other hand, represents a long-term stress associated with alarmingly high mortality rates, primarily due to cardiovascular complications, and is similarly related to chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance. 14. Effects of glucocorticoids or beta 2-agonists on inflammatory responses induced by organic dust in vitro and in vivo
Sammanfattning : Exposure of healthy subjects in a swine barn causes an acute inflammatory response in the airways and an increase in bronchial responsiveness to methacholine. The aim of this thesis was to study the mechanisms by which glucocorticoids or Beta2-agonists interfere with the inflammatory response following swine house dust-exposure both in vitro and in vivo. 15. Transcriptional, epigenetic and lipidomic responses to metabolic interventions : implications for human obesity
Sammanfattning : Obesity is increasing worldwide in an epidemic manner and better prevention and treatments are urgently needed. Obesity is strongly associated with insulin resistance and predisposes for type 2 diabetes. LÄS MER
