16. Genetic factors, body constitution, and tumor characteristics in relation to breast cancer prognosis
Sammanfattning : Prior advancements in research on biomarkers and prognostic host factors have made it increasingly clear that breast cancer is an immensely heterogeneous disease. It remains difficult to predict which patients will benefit from different breast cancer treatments. Hence, interest in personalized medicine is internationally wide-spread and growing. LÄS MER
17. Pathophysiological and clinical studies on Crohn's disease in children
Sammanfattning : Crohn’s disease (CD) is often diagnosed in late childhood and early adulthood. Clinical findings include abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, perianal lesions, weight loss and growth retardation. Extra-intestinal manifestations, strictures and fistulas may complicate the disease. LÄS MER
18. Functional Role of Immune Complexes in Rheumatic and Parasitic Diseases
Sammanfattning : Immune complexes (IC) have key pathological roles in both autoimmune and infectious diseases. In this thesis functional mechanisms behind IC-driven inflammation in rheumatic diseases and tropical infections have been studied, with special focus on the contribution of autoantibodies and cytokine-inducing properties of IC. 19. Gene and pathway associations in neurodevelopmental disorders
Sammanfattning : Neurodevelopmental disorders are complex and heterogenous disorders affecting brain development. In this thesis, we study intellectual disability (ID) and schizophrenia, and we applied genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic techniques to identify and further investigate candidate variants and important genes and pathways involved in pathology of these two disorders. 20. Microbial and epigenetic factors in the pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma
Sammanfattning : While uncommon in most of the world, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) shows an unusual geographic and ethnic distribution, being highly prevalent in Southern China and Southeast Asia. Genetic susceptibility, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and additional environmental exposures are well established risk factors for NPC in endemic areas. LÄS MER
