11. Afterlives : Jewish and Non-Jewish Polish Survivors of Nazi Persecution in Sweden Documenting Nazi Atrocities, 1945-1946
Sammanfattning : This dissertation examines how Jewish and non-Jewish Polish survivors of Nazi persecution who came to Sweden in 1945 as ‘repatriates’ and were associated with the Polish Research Institute in Lund, Sweden (PIZ) were engaged in transnational social and political processes during the early postwar period, including documenting Nazi persecution and contributing to postwar humanitarian and justice efforts. PIZ, a transnational initiative that documented the experiences of Polish survivors of Nazi persecution for history and justice in 1945 and 1946, was one of the few such initiatives undertaken by survivors who were refugees in a country not directly involved in the Second World War. 12. The Politics of Combat : The Political and Strategic Impact of Tactical-Level Subcultures, 1939-1995
Sammanfattning : This dissertation argues that lower-level military leaders, commanding between a dozen and a few hundred troops, can have a major political and strategic impact. Furthermore, it is argued that the decisions made by these lower-level military leaders are shaped by subcultures, in particular under conditions of stress and uncertainty. LÄS MER
13. "I wanted to know how this deed was done" : Raul Hilberg, the Holocaust and History
Sammanfattning : Raul Hilberg was a pioneer of Holocaust studies and for many decades the Holocaust scholar par excellence. He embarked upon the study of the Nazi genocide after the war, and established the understanding of the Holocaust as a bureaucratically administered “destruction process,” carried out by men who were not different from the German population in general. 14. A Rhetoric of Ambivalence : The Memory World of the Nazi Perpetrator in Jonathan Littell’s The Kindly Ones
Sammanfattning : In Jonathan Littell’s The Kindly Ones (Les Bienveillantes, 2006), a discrepancy is found between the historical account and the personal story, indicating the major ambivalence that arises from the creation of a historical world (noesis) as opposed to a fictional world (poiesis). This major ambivalence is connected to a range of minor ambivalences (and other elements of uncertainty) that are related to the novel’s treatment of the historical period of World War II in ways that unsettle and defamiliarize the typical standards of Holocaust representations. 15. "Chorus of the Saved" : Constructing the Holocaust Survivor in Swedish Public Discourse, 1943-1966
Sammanfattning : In this dissertation I examine how the Holocaust survivor has been constructed in Swedish public discourse during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. This is done using a Foucauldian-inspired genealogical method through which an eclectic collection of sources—newsreels, films, radio programs, television programs and newspaper articles—is analyzed.
