  1. 1. The neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) : possible risk of human exposure, and the effect and function in diatoms

    Författare :Sea-Yong Kim; Sara Rydberg; Sandra Banack; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : The toxic secondary metabolites β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) produced by phytoplankton groups such as cyanobacteria, diatoms and dinoflagellates are known to cause neurotoxicity in vertebrates. BMAA has been linked to development of the neurodegenerative diseases amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/Parkinsonism dementia complex (ALS/PDC) and Alzheimer's disease. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Development and validation of a localized murine candidiasis model : The pathogenesis, chemotheraphy and defense mechanisms to Candida mastitis in the lactating mouse

    Författare :Faisal Abdi Guhad; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology and anatomy; Murine model; Candida albicans; Pathogenesis; Virulence factors; Amphotericin B; Fluconazole; Complement activation; C3c; SCID mice; Nude mice; Fysiologi och anatomi; Physiology and pharmacology; Fysiologi och farmakologi; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : A murine model of localized candidiasis (mastitis) was developed. The model was analyzed withrespect to its discriminative abilities through investigation of the virulence properties of C.albicans mutant strains compared with the wild-type parental strain. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Studies of nucleotide receptors-induced calcium response in glomerular mesangial cells and afferent arterioles

    Författare :Antonio M. Gutiérrez; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology and anatomy; mesangial cells; nucleotide receptors; purinoceptors; desensitization; afferent arterioles; ATP; UTP; adenosine; protein phosphatases; calcium; Fysiologi och anatomi; Physiology and pharmacology; Fysiologi och farmakologi; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : It is known that intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) changes in rat glomerular mesangial cells (GMC) and rabbit afferent arterioles (AA) in response to extracellular nucleotides. We studied the nucleotide-induced calcium response in cultured GMC and AA. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Alpha-2 Adrenergic Receptors and Signal Transduction : Effector Output in Relation to G-Protein Coupling and Signalling Cross-Talk

    Författare :Johnny Näsman; Peter Evans; Uppsala universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : The alpha-2 adrenergic receptor (α2-AR) subfamily includes three different subtypes, α2A-, α2B- and α2C-AR, all believed to exert their function through heterotrimeric Gi/o-proteins. The present study was undertaken in order to investigate subtype differences in terms of cellular response and to explore other potential signalling pathways of α2-ARs. LÄS MER

  5. 5. The Role of Dopamine-Metabolising Enzymes in Renal Sodium Handling. An Experimental Study in vivo

    Författare :Cecilia Odlind; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology and anatomy; dopamine; kidney; sodium; MAO; COMT; rat; mice; RBF; oxygen; renal; L-dopa; DOPAC; entacapone; phenelzine; dopamine receptors; Fysiologi och anatomi; Physiology and pharmacology; Fysiologi och farmakologi; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Dopamine (DA) has been shown to act as an intrarenal natriuretic hormone and defects in the renal DA system have been associated with some forms of hypertension. How the DA activity is upregulated durin- increased sodium intake is, however, unknown. LÄS MER
