21. Long-term performance of poly(vinyl chloride) cables : mechanical and electrical performances and the effect of plasticizer migration
Sammanfattning : Cables insulated with plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) were aged at temperatures between 80 and 180 °C in air and their conditions were assessed by indenter modulus measurements, tensile testing, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and liquid chromatography (HPLC). Electrical testing of oven-aged cable samples was performed in order to relate the electrical functionality during a high-energy line break accident to the mechanical properties and to establish a lifetime criterion. 22. Movement ecology of aerial insectivorous birds : Individual-based studies on swifts and nightjars
Sammanfattning : Many birds are predisposed to annually undertake movements over large temporal and spatial scales. They have an efficient flight machinery, demonstrate impressive capacities in storing and burning fuel, and they exhibit necessary orientation and navigational skills. LÄS MER
23. Coal Lives : Italians and the Metabolism of Coal in Wallonia, Belgium, 1945-1980
Sammanfattning : This manuscript focuses on the relationship between coal and the history of the over 300,000 Italian miners who moved to Wallonia, Belgium, from 1946 onwards, in accordance to the State agreement between Italy and Belgium known as “men in exchange for coal.” Notably, I use environmental history of migration to analyze what I define as “the metabolism of coal. 24. Bird orientation: external cues and ecological factors
Sammanfattning : Birds are generally capable of accurate orientation. In this thesis I present studies about the external cues and the ecological factors that influences bird orientation. A multitude of environmental cues are used to select and maintain a proper direction. LÄS MER
25. Memory Effects on Iron Oxide Filled Carbon Nanotubes
Sammanfattning : In this Licentiate Thesis, the properties and effects of iron and iron oxide filled carbon nanotube (Fe-CNT) memories are investigated using experimental characterization and quantum physical theoretical models. Memory devices based on the simple assembly of Fe-CNTs between two metallic contacts are presented as a possible application involving the resistive switching phenomena of this material. LÄS MER
