1. The supporting conversation partner in disordered communication
Sammanfattning : Aim: The overall aim of the thesis was to examine some aspects of conversation partners (CP) of people with communication disorder caused by stroke-induced aphasia or Parkinson’s disease (PwCD). Central questions were (i) can conversation partners learn to adapt their communicative behaviour in conversation to the specific needs of the persons with communication impairment and (ii) are there any associations between characteristics of the participants in conversation and the ability to be a supportive communication partner? Factors that might influence the quantitative measurement of communicative behaviour were also examined. LÄS MER
2. Aphasia and Communication in Everyday Life : Experiences of persons with aphasia, significant others, and speech-language pathologists
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to describe the experiences of persons with aphasia and their significant others of their conversations and use of communication strategies, examine current practice of family-oriented speech-language pathology (SLP) services, and test a family-oriented intervention in the early phase of rehabilitation.The persons with aphasia valued having conversations despite perceiving their aphasia as a serious social disability. Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the use of speech-generating device (SGD)-mediated interaction with children with anarthria, severe physical impairments and intellectual disabilities due to cerebral palsy with a focus on partner strategies and social practices.Studies I and II were cross-sectional studies that used questionnaires, which were analyzed using descriptive statistics and directed content analysis. 5. Supporting persons with dementia and their spouses' everyday occupations in the home environment
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate how persons with dementia and their informal caregivers do every day activities together and to evaluate the result from an intervention designed to encourage mutual engagement. The sample in all four studies consisted of 30 cohabiting couples, where one part was a healthy spouse caring for a partner diagnosed with mild to moderate stage dementia. LÄS MER
