  1. 36. Regulation of vascular function by fluid mechanical forces. Development of a new vascular experimental platform for integrative physiological and molecular biological studies of living conduit vessels

    Författare :Li-Ming Gan; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; perfusion model; endothelium; smooth muscle cells; shear stress; pressure; nitric oxide; endothelin-1; vascular endothelial growth factor; c-jun; c-fos; real-time PCR; NO probe.;

    Sammanfattning : The vascular endothelium is a multifunctional interface between blood flow and target organs and is continuously exposed to fluid mechanical forces such as shear stress, compressive, and tensile forces. Both in vivo and in vitro data indicate that biomechanical forces exert important modulating effects on key vascular functions. LÄS MER

  2. 37. Host response in sepsis

    Författare :Ingrid Berkestedt; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; severe sepsis; contact system; glycosaminoglycan; antimicrobial peptide; human;

    Sammanfattning : Sepsis is a serious condition characterized by a systemic inflammatory response to an infection. Increased vascular leakage, vasodilation and heart failure cause circulatory disturbances challenging the intensivist. Despite modern medication and high technology supportive care, mortality is high. LÄS MER

  3. 38. Endothelium-derived Vasoactive Factors and Leukocyte-derived Inflammatory Mediators. Studies in subjects with or at risk for vascular disease

    Författare :Anwaar M Ibrahim; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostacyclin.; Postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy; Nitric oxide; Endothelin; Diabetes mellitus; Cytokines; Cholesterol; Atherosclerosis; Cerebral ischemia; Cardiovascular system; Kardiovaskulära systemet;

    Sammanfattning : This study was undertaken to evaluate relationships between endothelial function (assessed as mediators of endothelium-derived vasoactive factors such as nitric oxide [NO], prostacyclin [PGI2] and endothelin [ET-1] ), and risk factors for atherosclerosis, as well as to study possible relationships between endothelial function and leukocyte activation (indicated by measurements of leukocyte-derived inflammatory mediators) in subjects with or at risk for atherosclerosis. In subjects with asymptomatic atherosclerosis we found inverse relationships between cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in platelets (mediator of NO activity) and both serum total cholesterol and plasma ET-1 suggesting that NO-mediated vasodilation may be impaired in hypercholesterolemia and that maintenance of vascular tone is achieved by a balance between NO and ET-1. 4. 39. Hyperemic Brachial Artery Blood Flow Velocity

    Författare :Susann J Järhult; Lars Lind; Johan Sundström; Peter Friberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Cardiovascular medicine; Kardiovaskulär medicin; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to evaluate the blood flow velocity in the Brachial artery during reactive hyperemia. Primarily to appraise the information it might contain regarding cardiovascular function and cardiovascular risk. LÄS MER

  5. 40. Cardiac function in experimental septic and non-septic conditions with special reference to the endothelin system

    Författare :David Konrad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :sepsis; cardiac; endothelin; endotoxin; levosimendan; contractility; diastolic; LVPVR.;

    Sammanfattning : Myocardial depression in sepsis has been intensely investigated for the past 30 years and still poses a considerable issue in the intensive care units. Both systolic and diastolic dysfunction is implicated, correlating with severity of illness and mortality The importance of the endothelin (ET) system in normal physiology has been extensively studied.
