21. Pathogenic effects of alpha-synuclein: modifications and toxicity
Sammanfattning : Accumulation of intraneuronal inclusions, containing mainly a protein called alpha-synuclein (asyn), is thought to play a critical role in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD). In these so called Lewy bodies, the majority of asyn is phosphorylated at serine 129 (pS129) suggesting that post-translational modifications may play a critical role in the process of aggregate formation. 22. On the Use of Ultrasound Phase Data for Arterial Characterization
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is one of the major causes of death in the world. It is an inflammatory disease in the arteries which causes a gradual increase in arterial wall thickness and stiffness. Eventually a plaque could be formed, protruding into the artery and partially occluding the blood flow. LÄS MER
23. Adhesion and Nanotribology of Biofibres
Sammanfattning : The fibre probe atomic force microscope is developed, which allows direct measurement of force and friction between single fibres at the nanoscale under various conditions. In this work, polyester and human hair fibres were used as being representative of synthetic and animal fibre. LÄS MER
24. Vonnegut's duty-dance with death-theme and structure in Slaughterhouse-five
Sammanfattning : The influence of Vonnegut’s didactic purpose of writing on the treatment of theme and structure in Slaughterhouse-Five is investigated in this study. The following elements of structure are studied: point of view, the treatment of time, characterization, the use of other sources, and imagery. LÄS MER
25. Metapopulation ecology of Osmoderma eremita - dispersal, habitat quality and habitat history
Sammanfattning : This thesis starts with a review of different biodiversity assessment methods in forests and the rest deals with the metapopulation ecology of Osmoderma eremita, a threatened beetle living in hollow trees. I concentrate on the effect of dispersal, habitat quality and habitat history for the presence, population size and future survival of this species. LÄS MER
