11. Unraveling the role of NOTCH3 dysfunction in disease and for therapy development : a focus on CADASIL
Sammanfattning : The Notch signaling pathway, including the Notch3 receptor, is involved in many pivotal contexts of cell signaling and cell fate determination processes during development and in adulthood. Different mutations in the NOTCH3 receptor, which is highly expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC), are associated with various diseases, including developmental disorders, several forms of cancer, and vascular dementia. 12. Structure and host-receptor recognition studies of Gram-negative bacterial fimbriae assembled via the chaperone/Usher Pathway
Sammanfattning : Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC), and Yersinia enterocolitica (YE) are the principle etiological agents of acute and persistent diarrhea worldwide including resource-poor and industrialized regions. LÄS MER
13. Genetic studies of children with mental retardation
Sammanfattning : Mental retardation (MR) is characterised by significant limitations in intellectual function and adaptive behaviour. It is estimated that MR affects up to 3% of the population in Europe. Patients with MR are an aetiologically heterogeneous group. Approximately 25-35% of the patients have a genetic diagnosis. 14. Candida infections in immunocompromised children
Sammanfattning : Objective: Deep Candida infection (DCI) is a serious complication with high mortality in immunocompromised patients. The following studies (I, II, III, IV and V) were designed to investigate the relationship between infantile diarrhoea and faecal occurrence of Candida spp. LÄS MER
15. Hydrocephalus in children. Epidemiology and outcome
Sammanfattning : Aims: To analyse trends in the live-birth prevalence of infantile hydrocephalus and hydrocephalus associated with myelomeningocele (MMC) during the period 1989-2002 and to study the outcome in terms of learning disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and visual deficits. Another objective was to explore motor function and disability profiles in various aetiological and gestational-age subgroups and to see whether treatment complications and neuroradiological findings correlate with outcome.
