1. Abiotic stress and plant-microbe interactions in Norway spruce
Sammanfattning : Norway spruce (Picea abies) is a dominant tree species in boreal forests with extensive ecological and economic value. Climate change is threatening these ecosystems, with rising temperatures impacting cold hardening and increasing drought stress in regions experiencing lower precipitation. LÄS MER
2. Plant-microbe-soil interactions and soil nitrogen dynamics in boreal forests : development of nitrogen limitation
Sammanfattning : Widespread nitrogen (N) limitation of plant growth in boreal forests is a well recognized phenomenon. Yet, the mechanisms responsible for the development of N limitation are unknown. By exploring the linkage between N cycling and microbial community structure, this thesis examines the role of soil microorganisms in N limitation development. LÄS MER
3. Methane dynamics in northern wetlands: Significance of vascular plants
Sammanfattning : The studies presented in Papers I to VI illustrate several different aspects of the impact of vascular plants on methane emissions from northern natural wetlands. The subject has been approached on different scales, ranging from the study of microbial substrates in the vicinity of a single plant root, to an attempt to extrapolate some of the results to the entire northern hemisphere north of 50°N. 4. Symbiotic and pathogenic factors in plant-microbe interaction: Structural basis of C-glycoside metabolism and lipoprotein transport in bacteria
Sammanfattning : The communication between plants and bacteria involves a complex chemical signaling network that mediates responses to various biotic and abiotic stresses, as well as establishing symbiotic relationships between different organisms. The first part of the thesis focuses on a mechanism for symbiotic communication between plants and bacteria and more specifically on how C-glycosylated aromatic polyketide compounds produced by plants can be used as a mechanism for plants to communicate with beneficial bacteria. 5. Signalling between plants and microorganisms
Sammanfattning : Plants and microbes can interact in several ways. Plants can be attacked by different types of pathogens like fungi, virus and bacteria, but can also form symbioses with fungi and bacteria. Certain common antimicrobial proteins are produced by the plants regardless of the type of microbial interaction with the plant. LÄS MER
