1. Metal-Organic Complexes at Surfaces
Sammanfattning : The adsorption of different metal-organic complexes at surfaces was investigated by spectroscopic techniques (x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy) and by scanning tunnelling microscopy. The investigation methods are able to provide atomic scale information on the studied systems, which moreover originates from the top-most atomic layers in a sample, meaning that they are surface sensitive techniques. 2. Fabrication and Functionalization of Graphene and Other Carbon Nanomaterials in Solution
Sammanfattning : In the last decades several new nanostructures of carbon have been discovered, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the recently discovered 2-dimensional graphene. These new materials exhibit extraordinary and unique properties—making them extremely interesting both for fundamental science and for future applications. LÄS MER
3. De Novo Design and Characterization of Surface Binding Peptides - Steps toward Functional Surfaces
Sammanfattning : The ability to create surfaces with well-defined chemical properties is a major research field. One possibility to do this is to design peptides that bind with a specific secondary structure to silica nanoparticles. LÄS MER
4. Towards flexible organic electronics : photoelectron spectroscopy of surfaces and interfaces
Sammanfattning : Intensive studies of conjugated molecules and polymers are carried out all over the world with the intent of obtaining cheap and efficient organic electronic devices. The most mature application at the moment is the light-emitting diode, but also photovoltaic cells and different types of transistors shows promising results. LÄS MER
5. Synthesis of a key derivative of glycosylphosphatidylinositol substances and synthesis of spacer glycosides for use in the formation of glycoconjugates and of self-assembled monolayer surfaces
Sammanfattning : The first chapter of this thesis describes glycosylation strategies for obtaining derivatives of 2-amino-2-deoxy-a-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)-D-myo-inositol, a key building block for synthesis of glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor substances and also proposed to be part of a second messenger for insulin. The second chapter describes the synthesis of bifunctional oligoethylene glycol spacers and glycosylation of these for use in formation of glycoconjugates.
