16. Characterization of Bacterial Biofilms for Wastewater Treatment
Sammanfattning : Research performed at the Division of Environmental Microbiology has over the last years resulted in the isolation of possible bacterial key-organisms with efficient nutrient removal properties (Comamonas denitrificans, Brachymonas denitrificans, Aeromonas hydrophila). Effective use of these organisms for enhanced nutrient removal in wastewater treatment applications requires the strains to be retained, to proliferate and to maintain biological activity within theprocess. 17. Mechanisms structuring the pelagic microbial food web : Importance of resource and predation
Sammanfattning : Temporal and spatial variations of pelagic microorganisms in the northern Baltic Sea were studied, as well as factors influencing their abundance and growth rates. Three main questions were asked 1) How does increased productivity influence the structure of the microbial food web? 2) Does predation limitation vary between trophic levels? 3) What is the relative importance of resource and predation limitation at different trophic levels?A field study in the northern Baltic Sea showed that dominating protozoa, flagellates and ciliates, increased with increasing primary productivity from north to south. 18. Wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands : Effects of vegetation, hydraulics and data analysis methods
Sammanfattning : Degradation of water resources has become one of the most pressing global concerns currently facing mankind. Constructed Wetlands (CWs) represent a concept to combat deterioration of water resources by acting as buffers between wastewater and receiving water bodies. LÄS MER
19. Life History Strategies in Linnaea borealis
Sammanfattning : About 70% of the plant species in the temperate zone are characterised by clonal growth, clonal species are also in majority in the Arctic and Subarctic where they affect the structure and composition of the vegetation. It is therefore of great importance to increase our knowledge about clonal plants and their growth and life histories. LÄS MER
20. Unlocking Sustainability in Wastewater Denitrification through Waste-Derived Volatile Fatty Acids
Sammanfattning : Carbon sources play a critical role in biological nitrogen removal during wastewater treatment, where strict total nitrogen limits on effluent discharge apply. Organic carbon sources serve as electron donors in the denitrification for heterotrophic denitrifiers. LÄS MER
