  1. 6. The Threat to the Baltic Salmon - a Combination of Persistent Pollutants, Parasite and Oxidative Stress

    Författare :Maria Persson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Salmo salar; Atlantic salmon; polychlorinated biphenyls; Animal ecology; akvatisk ekologi; limnologi; Marinbiologi; limnology; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; Ekologi; Ecology; lake Vänern; lake Vättern; Baltic Sea; Eubothrium crassum; aryl hydrocarbon receptor; AHR; consumption advice; stable isotopes; astaxanthin; EROD; M74; antioxidants; biomagnification; cestodes; parasites; DDT; Djurekologi; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; PCB;

    Sammanfattning : Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from the Baltic Sea suffer from a reproduction disease known as the M74-syndrome. Newly hatched fry develop nerve disorders and die between 3-5 days after the first symptoms are seen. This is a maternally transmitted disease that is casued by a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. 2. 7. Soil phosphorus – a multidimensional resource that plays an important role for grassland plant species richness

    Författare :Jakob Sandberg; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; niche dimension; nutrient limitation; niche differentiation; competition; soil nitrogen; soil phosphorus; plant diversity; species richness; Grassland; land use; landscape scale;

    Sammanfattning : The semi-natural grassland habitats contain an important part of the plant diversity in Europe. Changes in farming practices have lead to drastic decreases in plant species richness. The aim of the present thesis is to contribute to the knowledge about mechanisms governing the plant species richness in grasslands with emphasis on soil nutrients. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Towards sustainability of environmental protection : recovery of nutrients from wastewater filtration and the washing of arsenic contaminated soils

    Författare :Lea Rastas Amofah; Helen French; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering;

    Sammanfattning : Conventional methods for wastewater treatment and remediation of the sites withcontaminated soils focus on protection of human health, receiving waters and theenvironment. Towards this end, these methods concentrate on the reduction or removal of polluting substances, and therefore, are not well suited for creating resources through the recovery of nutrients, energy and decontaminated soils. 4. 9. Internal oxygen transport to below-ground parts: importance for emergent macrophytes

    Författare :Viveka Vretare Strand; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; water depth; zonation; phenotypic plasticity; biomass allocation; pressurised ventilation; oxygen; Phragmites australis; emergent macrophytes; common reed; Hydrobiology; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines factors regulating growth and distribution of emergent plants with focus on effects of oxygen supply to the roots. Greenhouse experiments revealed that P. australis acclimatizes to specific water depths with phenotypic plasticity. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Modelling effects of climate change and forestry on weathering rates and base cation cycling in forest soils

    Författare :Veronika Kronnäs; BECC: Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; weathering; forest; biogeochemistry; Dynamic Modelling; ForSAFE;

    Sammanfattning : Base cations are important in forest soils as nutrients for vegetation and protection against soil acidification. Today, base cations have been lost from soils through acidification and forest harvesting. With low levels in soils, temporary situations of deficiency could occur. LÄS MER
