  1. 6. Colonic barrier function in ulcerative colitis - Interactions between ion and mucus secretion

    Författare :Jenny K Gustafsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; intestine; mucus; ion transport; colitis; CFTR;

    Sammanfattning : Anion and mucus secretions have traditionally been looked upon as two separate parts of the epithelial defense system. The importance of anion secretion has been attributed to its role in creating the driving force for fluid secretion that flushes the epithelium from bacteria, while mucus secretion ensures protection via the mucus layer that forms a physical barrier between the bacteria and the epithelium. 2. 7. Citrobacter rodentium and Escherichia coli interactions with mucus producing colonic epithelical cells

    Författare :Sinan Sharba; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; A E pathogens; cytokines; epithelium; mitochondria; mucus;

    Sammanfattning : The epithelial cells together with the mucus layer protect the host from noxious luminal substances and pathogenic invasion. Pathogens have evolved numerous strategies to circumvent these barriers and mount infection. C. rodentium is a murine model for the attaching and effacing intestinal E. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Mucus and mucins during gastrointestinal infections

    Författare :Nazanin Navabi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mucin; gastrointestinal cell lines; mucus layer; secreted mucin; cell surface mucin; H. pylori; C. rodentium; ETEC; mucin secretion; goblet cells;

    Sammanfattning : The gastrointestinal tract is protected by a continuously secreted mucus layer formed by mucin glycoproteins. The mucus layer and mucins change dynamically during infection. The main focus of this thesis was to investigate the changes in mucin and the mucus layer in the gastrointestinal tract during infection with the gastrointestinal pathogens C. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Early stage inflammation and cancer as reflected in the gastrointestinal mucus composition: implications for diagnosis, prognosis and pathogenesis

    Författare :Karolina S. Jabbar; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mucus; Mass spectrometry; MUC2; MUC5AC; IPMN; Pancreatic cysts; Ulcerative colitis; IBS; Brachyspira;

    Sammanfattning : Mucus covers our inner interfaces towards the environment, providing protection while enabling vital interaction with the outside world. The mucus is built around mucin proteins, which are important for our defences against infection and inflammation, but may also contribute to carcinogenesis and tumour progression. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Gastrointestinal mucosal protective mechanisms : Mudolatory effects of Heliobacter pyroli on the gastric mucus gel barrier and mucosal blood flow in vivo

    Författare :Christer Atuma; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology and anatomy; mucus gel layer; mucosal blood flow; mucus thickness; chronic infection; rat; platelet activating factor; mast cell; nitric oxide; nitric oxide synthase; ketotifen; intra-vital microscopy; microelectrode; laser-Doppler flowmetry; L-NNA; Fysiologi och anatomi; Physiology and pharmacology; Fysiologi och farmakologi; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The gastrointestinal mucus gel layer and blood flow are two important mechanisms for protection at the pre-epithelial and sub-epithelial levels, respectively. Helicobacter pylori might circumvent these mechanisms and elicit a chronic inflammatory response with consequent ulcers in the stomach and duodenum. LÄS MER
