  1. 1. Intestinal Bypass and Total Parenteral Nutrition: Changes in Gut Function and Morphology

    Författare :Mikael Ekelund; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; orthopaedics; Surgery; Gastroenterologi; Gastro-enterology; Fysiologi; Physiology; total parenteral nutrition; supersensitivity; plasticity; intestinal bypass; interstitial cells of Cajal; goblet cells; eosinophils; adaptation; enteric nervous system;

    Sammanfattning : Abolition of enteral nutrition is sometimes required in severe illness. The primary aim of the present work has been to elucidate possible changes in intestinal morphology and motor function in absence of enteral nutrition. Total absence of enteral nutrition in an isolated intestinal segment was created by bypassing the distal ileum in a rat model. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Mucins in normal and diseased airways

    Författare :Hans Hovenberg; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Respiratory system; Submucosal glands; Goblet cells; Organ culture; Respiratory tract; Mucins; Mucus glycoproteins; Andningsorganen;

    Sammanfattning : Mucus glycoproteins (mucins) are the principal constituents of respiratory secretions in health and disease. The increased 'acidity' of mucin producing cells in the bronchitic airways is not reflected in a change of negative charge of bronchitic mucins. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Mucus and mucins during gastrointestinal infections

    Författare :Nazanin Navabi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mucin; gastrointestinal cell lines; mucus layer; secreted mucin; cell surface mucin; H. pylori; C. rodentium; ETEC; mucin secretion; goblet cells;

    Sammanfattning : The gastrointestinal tract is protected by a continuously secreted mucus layer formed by mucin glycoproteins. The mucus layer and mucins change dynamically during infection. The main focus of this thesis was to investigate the changes in mucin and the mucus layer in the gastrointestinal tract during infection with the gastrointestinal pathogens C. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Human Embryonic Stem Cells; A novel model system for early human development

    Författare :Karin Gertow; Lars Ährlund-Richter; Henrik Semb; Karolinska Institute; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; human embryonic stem cells; Human embryonic stem cells; model system; differentiation; xeno-grafting; teratoma; development; karyotype; chromosomal integrity; variant.;

    Sammanfattning : Human embryonic stem cells (HESC) have since their first description in 1998 been recognized as a theoretically endless source of cells capable of differentiation into any somatic cell type. Although great attention has been given to their potential use in cell- based therapy, they are equally important as research tools for studies on early human development, both normal and diseased. 5. 5. Defence capabilities of human intestinal epithelial cells

    Författare :Anna Fahlgren; Sten Hammarström; Marie-Louise Hammarström; Gudmundur Gudmundsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; intestine; mucosa; epithelium; antimicrobial; defensins; glycocalyx; ulcerative colitis; Crohn´s disease; celiac disease; Immunologi; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : The epithelial cells lining the intestinal mucosa separate the underlying tissue from components of the intestinal lumen. Innate immunity mediated by intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) provides rapid protective functions against microorganisms. Innate immunity also participates in orchestrating adaptive immunity. LÄS MER
