6. Molecular and functional anatomy of the mouse olfactory epithelium
Sammanfattning : The olfactory system is important for social behaviors, feeding and avoiding predators. Detection of odorous molecules is made by odorant receptors on specialized sensory neurons in the olfactory epithelial sheet. LÄS MER
7. Activity-regulated retinoic acid signaling in olfactory sensory neurons
Sammanfattning : The aim of the studies included in the thesis is to better understand the interplay between neuronal activity-dependent gene regulation and the bioactive vitamin A metabolite all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) during postnatal development, refinement and maintenance of precise neuronal connectivity using the olfactory sensory neuron (OSN) in the olfactory epithelium (OE) of genetically modified mice as a model. We show that:Inhibition of RA receptor (RAR)-mediated transcription in OSNs reduces expression of the olfactory cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) ion channel, which is required for odorant receptor (OR)-mediated stimulus transduction. 8. Neurotropic influenza A virus infection in the mouse brain : targeting, persistence and functional effects
Sammanfattning : Viral infections of the central nervous system have been associated with sensory, motor and behavioral disturbances both in humans and in animals. An example of this is influenza A virus infection that causes acute respiratory diseases, which occasionally are followed by complications from the central nervous system. LÄS MER
9. Investigating the function of Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase
Sammanfattning : Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK) was discovered in 1994, as a chromosomal translocation, t(2;5)(p23;q35), often seen in Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphomas (ALCL). Since then ALK has been extensively studied in this disease as well as in different model organisms. LÄS MER
10. Expression of cathelicidin antimicrobial peptides in man and rat
Sammanfattning : Endogenous antimicrobial peptides are effectors of innate immunity. They kill microorganisms by disrupting their cell membranes, but are also believed to have signaling functions in the immune system. They are present in epithelia, secretions and phagocytic cells. LÄS MER
