1. The physiological processing of Alzheimer-associated amyloid beta precursor protein in human and animal-derived neuronal models
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive impairment due to the loss of structure and/or function of neurons, and amyloid plaques composed of aggregated-amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides, primarily species ending at the amino acid 42 (Aβ42), are one of the major neuropathological hallmarks of AD. Aβ peptides of different lengths are produced by sequential cleavage of amyloid beta precursor protein (APP) by α-, β- and γ- secretases. LÄS MER
2. Crossing the Midline : Locomotor Neuronal Circuitry Formation
Sammanfattning : Networks at various levels of the nervous system coordinate different motor patterns such as respiration, eye or hand movements and locomotion. Intrinsic rhythm-generating networks that are located in the spinal cord generate motor behaviors that underlie locomotion in vertebrates. LÄS MER
3. The corticogeniculate synapse : a neuronal amplifier?
Sammanfattning : Consciousness is a nervous process that handles only a limited amount of information. Therefore the nervous system needs to select the most relevant input for aware processing. LÄS MER
4. Activity-regulated retinoic acid signaling in olfactory sensory neurons
Sammanfattning : The aim of the studies included in the thesis is to better understand the interplay between neuronal activity-dependent gene regulation and the bioactive vitamin A metabolite all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) during postnatal development, refinement and maintenance of precise neuronal connectivity using the olfactory sensory neuron (OSN) in the olfactory epithelium (OE) of genetically modified mice as a model. We show that:Inhibition of RA receptor (RAR)-mediated transcription in OSNs reduces expression of the olfactory cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) ion channel, which is required for odorant receptor (OR)-mediated stimulus transduction. 5. On the Autonomic Control of Blood Flow and Secretion in Salivary Glands. Functional and morphological aspects on muscarinic receptor subtypes in different species
Sammanfattning : Parasympathetic nervous activity is the principal stimulus for evoking fluid responses within salivary glands. Concomitantly to the onset of this response, the blood flow increases. LÄS MER
