6. Approaching Mathematical Discourse : Two analytical frameworks and their relation to problem solving interactions
Sammanfattning : The driving force of conducting the two studies presented in this thesis is to examine ways that conceptual understanding and problem solving could be part of mathematics teaching, and through that, part of students' mathematical knowledge. The specific aims of the thesis are: 1) to characterize the classroom discourse of two, apparently similar, problem solving courses in teacher education and 2) to discuss the possibilities of developing two analytical approaches - the communicational approach to cognition and the dialogical approach - used for studying mathematical discourse. 7. Admissible transformations and the group classification of Schrödinger equations
Sammanfattning : We study admissible transformations and solve group classification problems for various classes of linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equations with an arbitrary number n of space variables. The aim of the thesis is twofold. LÄS MER
8. Dirichlet's problem in Pluripotential Theory
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we focus on Dirichlet's problem for the complex Monge-Ampère equation. That is, for a given non-negative Radon measure µ we are interested in the conditions under which there exists a plurisubharmonic function u such that (ddcu)n=µ, where (ddc)n is the complex Monge-Ampère operator. 9. On Half-Space and Shock-Wave Problems for Discrete Velocity Models of the Boltzmann Equation
Sammanfattning : We study some questions related to general discrete velocity (with arbitrarily number of velocities) models (DVMs) of the Boltzmann equation. In the case of plane stationary problems the typical DVM reduces to a dynamical system (system of ODEs). Properties of such systems are studied in the most general case. LÄS MER
10. Combinatorial complexes, Bruhat intervals and reflection distances
Sammanfattning : The various results presented in this thesis are naturallysubdivided into three different topics, namely combinatorialcomplexes, Bruhat intervals and expected reflection distances. Each topic is made up of one or several of the altogether sixpapers that constitute the thesis. LÄS MER
