  1. 11. Molecular ecology of marine mammals

    Författare :Morten Tange Olsen; Per Palsbøll; Martine Bérubé; William “Bill” Amos; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Marine mammals; molecular ecology; life history; environmental change; phenotypic plasticity; SNPs; telomeres; molekylärgenetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Sammanfattning : Marine mammals comprise a paraphyletic group of species whose current abundance and distribution has been greatly shaped by past environmental changes and anthropogenic impacts. This thesis describes molecular ecological approaches to answer questions regarding habitat requirements, genetic differentiation, and life-history trade-offs in three species of marine mammals. 2. 12. Non-indigenous zooplankton : the role of predatory cladocerans and of copepods in trophic dynamics

    Författare :Marc Andersen Borg; Fredrik Wulff; Markku Viitasalo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acartia tonsa; Bythotrephes longimanus; Cercopagis pengoi; egg production; fitness; food web changes; ingestion rates; invasive species; metabolic balance; mortality; non-indigenous zooplankton; predation impact; salinity tolerance; stable isotopes; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Human-mediated introductions of non-indigenous species now threaten to homogenize the biota of the Globe, causing huge economic and ecological damage. This thesis studies the ecological role of 3 invasive planktonic crustaceans, the omnivorous copepod Acartia tonsa (western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific) and the predatory cladocerans, Cercopagis pengoi (Ponto-Caspian) and Bythotrephes longimanus (Eurasian). 3. 13. Effects of Marine Protected Areas on Tropical Seagrass Ecosystems

    Författare :Elisa Alonso Aller; Johan S Eklöf; Charlotte Berkström; Martin Gullström; Glenn Hyndes; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; coastal ecosystems; seagrass; marine protected areas; management; conservation; fish; herbivory; Western Indian Ocean; East Africa; tropical; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Seagrass beds are highly productive coastal ecosystems that sustain a rich and diverse associated fauna and flora. Increasing anthropogenic pressures threaten seagrass ecosystems and have already led to major seagrass losses across the world. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Zooplankton growth and trophic linkages : Implications for fish feeding conditions in the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Towe Holmborn; Elena Gorokhova; Sture Hansson; Ilppo Vuorinen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; AARS activity; biochemical markers; Clupea harengus; copepod physiology; food web interactions; non-indigenous species; RNA-based indices; Sprattus sprattus; stable isotopes; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this Thesis was to improve our understanding and assessment of feeding conditions for zooplanktivorous fish in the Baltic Sea.We investigated (papers I, II) the usefulness of biochemical proxies for assessments of growth and metabolic rates in the dominant Baltic copepod Acartia bifilosa. 5. 15. Biodiversity and genetic patterns in marine invertebrates

    Författare :Emma Vodoti; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :zoology; marine biodiversity;

    Sammanfattning : Abstract: Systematics based on genetic data has both confirmed and contradicted earlier, morphologically defined species and their relatedness. Morphology does not always correspond to genetic lineages, and this will inevitably affect both traditional systematics as well as biodiversity assessments. LÄS MER
