26. Transarterial chemoembolization in primary liver and kidney malignancies
Sammanfattning : Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of liver cancer, and the most current treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma is transarterial chemoembolization using drug-eluting beads (DEB-TACE). The concept of TACE might also technically be applicable to other types of hypervascular cancers such as renal cell carcinoma (RCC). LÄS MER
27. Telomerase in hematological and other malignancies : therapeutic implications
Sammanfattning : The Telomere is a nucleoprotein complex consisting of TTAGGG repeated sequences covered by specialized binding proteins termed shelterins masking the end of linear chromosomes and thereby protecting the end of the chromosome from genomic instability. Telomeres become progressively shortened during cellular replication and acts as a mitotic clock to confer a limited lifespan to normal cells. LÄS MER
28. The clinical perspective on malignancies in renal transplanted patients
Sammanfattning : Post-transplant malignancies cause significant morbidity and mortality. In this thesis we investigated malignancies in renal transplanted patients from a clinical viewpoint. The use of regional tumour registries considerably improved identification of pre- and post-transplant malignancies, which are generally underreported in transplant registries. LÄS MER
29. Malignancies associated with gynecological cancer : epidemiological and etiological aspects
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to analyze the incidence and risk of second primary malignancies (SPM) in a Swedish cohort of gynecological cancer patients, to explore suggested risk factors associated with second primary malignancies in ovarian cancer patients, and to evaluate the risk of ovarian cancer in a cohort of breast cancer patients in relation to family history of breast or ovarian cancer. Incidence of second primary malignancies in 15,200 gynecologicaI cancer patients were investigated in a register-based study and compared to age- and calendar-specific incidence for women in the general population. 30. Infectious and bleeding complications in patients with hematological malignancies : Studies on diagnosis and prevention
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis is to improve knowledge about the prevention of infectious and bleeding complications in patients with hematological malignancies, primarily in those with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and myelodysplatic syndrome (MDS).Hypogammaglobulinemia, impaired production of immunoglobulins (Ig), is an established risk factor for infection, but the impact of IgG pure subclass deficiency (IgG subclass deficiency with adequate production of IgG, IgA, and IgM) has been debated.
