    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines how Erik XIV and Johan III of Sweden used ethos construction and rhetoric to legitimize the new strong royal power during their combined reign from 1561 to 1592. The study analyses three different crises of legitimacy to understand how the kings and their allies negotiated these challenges and how the various strategies used by the rulers affected their ability to expand the space of legitimate royal power.     Sammanfattning : According to a venerable argument about the formation of political regimes in historical Europe, taxation goes hand in hand with representation, as financial needs forced rulers to trade rights for revenue. In this dissertation I explore the reverse assumption, asking whether it is the case that non-taxation went hand in hand with non-representation? I argue that early modern rulers who had access to what I conceptualize as ‘proprietary revenue’—including profits from landownership, natural resource extraction, state-owned enterprise, and colonial plunder—could use such revenue to concentrate political authority in their own hands and rule as autocrats.     Sammanfattning : The purpose of this dissertation is to describe and analyze how the Royal House of Bernadotte maintained and strengthened its legitimacy in the united kingdoms of Sweden and Norway during the first half of the 19th century. Sweden’s repeated military setbacks during the first decade of that century had undermined the last vestiges of the autocratic monarchy’s legitimacy, and as a consequence King Gustav IV Adolf was deposed in a military coup in March 1809.
