21. Quantification of gene expression in single cells
Sammanfattning : Studies of apparently homogeneous cell populations and single cells often give highly divergent results. Cells exhibit varying responsiveness to stimuli and gene expression and they are in many aspects stochastic and unpredictable. We have developed a method to measure gene expression quantitatively in individual cells with real-time RT-PCR. LÄS MER
22. Studies of Innate and Adaptive Immunity in Islet Transplantation
Sammanfattning : Clinical islet transplantation is today an established alternative treatment for a selected group of type 1 diabetes patients. The predominant technique for transplantation is infusion of islets in the liver via the portal vein. LÄS MER
23. Properties of Endothelium and its Importance in Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans
Sammanfattning : Transplantation of insulin producing cells is currently the only cure for type 1 diabetes. However, even though the Edmonton protocol markedly increased the success rate of pancreatic islet transplantation, the long term insulin independence is still very poor. An adequate engraftment is critical for islet graft survival and function. LÄS MER
24. On macrophage contributions to tissue homeostasis : New insights on pancreas development and healing of ischemic injury
Sammanfattning : Besides providing host defence against innumerable threats, macrophages display additional key functions for preservation of tissue homeostasis. This thesis includes four studies that explore novel macrophage functions in both the development of islets of Langerhans and healing of ischemic injury in mice. LÄS MER
25. Studies of the Pancreas: Implications for Type 1 Diabetes Aetiology
Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a disease of severe insulin deficiency through loss of β cells in the endocrine pancreas. The T1D dogma maintains that a precipitating event unleashes autoimmunity in at-risk individuals, often measured through autoantibodies against β cell antigens. LÄS MER
