26. The violent ISM in Haro 11
Sammanfattning : This thesis introduces briefly physical processes operating in the ISM around massive starsand focuses on the impact strong stellar feedback has in creating large-scale structures in a galaxy.Stellar feedback is ubiquitous in star forming galaxies and its effect on the ISM depends strongly on the energy output from the most massive stars (M$\geq$7 \Mo ) and the properties of the surrounding gas. 27. The palaeolimnological record of regime shifts in lakes in response to climate change
Sammanfattning : Regime shifts in lake ecosystems can occur in response to both abrupt and continuous climate change, and the imprints they leave in palaeolimnological records allow us to investigate and better understand patterns and processes governing ecological changes on geological time scales. This thesis aims at investigating palaeolimnological records of regime shifts in lakes during the Holocene to explore how lake ecosystems responded to climate changes and anthropogenic activities and to identify thresholds or tipping points that produced regime shifts. 28. Human innate lymphocytes in host defense, tissue function and reproduction
Sammanfattning : The immune system is present in all tissues of the human body. In order to respond appropriately to infections, cells of the innate and adaptive immune system work in concert. LÄS MER
29. Modelling Damage Evolution and Fracture of Paper Materials
Sammanfattning : This thesis contains six papers dealing with different aspects of damage and fracture in paper. The work addresses the problem of material length scales in the context of deformation and fracture of paper materials. LÄS MER
30. The immunomodulatory function of staphylococcal superantigen on oral tolerance
Sammanfattning : Exposure to soluble proteins via the gut gives rise to systemic tolerance, a phenomenon called oral tolerance. Failure of oral tolerance results in allergy, a disease that has increased during the last decades in Western industrialized countries. The cause of this rapid increase is unknown. LÄS MER
