  1. 6. Signaling to the immature brain - Choroid plexus, insulin-like growth factor 1 and extracellular vesicles

    Författare :Niklas Ortenlöf; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; IGF-1; Choroid plexus; Immature brain; Extracellular vesicle; CSF; Preterm infants;

    Sammanfattning : Extremely preterm infants (i.e., born below 28 gestational weeks), are at high risk of developing brain morbidities including intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and neurodevelopmental impairment. Despite over 50 years of research, there is currently no effective therapy available for preventing IVH. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Apoptosis-related mechanisms in the immature brain after hypoxia-ischemia

    Författare :Xiaoyang Wang; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :hypoxia-ischemia; neonatal; caspase; ERK; XIAP; EPO; asialoEPO; brain;

    Sammanfattning : Aims: To characterize the activation of caspases-3 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in the neonatal brain after hypoxia-ischemia (HI) injury and evaluate the neuroprotective effect of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) protein, erythropoietin (EPO) and the non-erythropoietic derivative asialoEPO. Methods: Seven-day-old rats or 9-day-old mice were subjected to HI. LÄS MER

  3. 8. School-age outcomes of children born at the limit of viability : a Swedish national prospective follow-up study at 10 to 12 years

    Författare :Aijaz Farooqi; Serenius Fredrik; Hägglöf Bruno; Neil Marlow; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :school-age outcome; extremely immature; functional limitations; growth; special health care needs; mental health; executive functions; Pediatrics; pediatrik;

    Sammanfattning : Background/Aim: During the past two decades, major advances in maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, and the development of regionalized perinatal care have resulted in dramatic increases in survival rates, by more than 60%, of extremely immature (EI) infants born at less than 26 completed weeks of gestation, creating a new infant population. Studies of school-age outcomes in children with an extremely low birth weight of < 1000 g, born in the1980s, indicated that these children had a substantially high prevalence of low-severity neuropsychological deficits, behavioral problems, and difficulties at school. 4. 9. Inflammation and Cell Profileration Following Perinatal Brain Injury

    Författare :Katarina Järlestedt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; hypoxia-ischemia; immature brain; reactive gliosis; complement system; C3a; fear conditioning; lipopolysaccharide; inflammation;

    Sammanfattning : Inflammation plays an important role in cerebral ischemic injury in the immature brain. The aim of the thesis was to investigate (1) the role of astrocyte activation and reactive gliosis in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury, (2) the role of complement derived peptide C3a in neonatal HI brain injury, (3) the effect of neonatal HI brain injury on fear learning and behaviour, (4) the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced systemic inflammation on cell proliferation in the developing brain. 5. 10. Adenosine receptors in the immature brain : with special reference to their role in hypoxic ischemia

    Författare :Ulrika Ådén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Newborn; neonatal; caffeine; theophylline; hypoxia-ischemia; adenosine; immature;

    Sammanfattning : Although the newborn brain tolerates a much longer period of oxygen deprivation and ischemia than does the adult brain, perinatal hypoxic ischemia probably is an important cause of neurological dysfunction, cerebral palsy and epilepsy later in life. Hence it is important to investigate the mechanisms that modulate the extent of perinatal ischemic brain damage. LÄS MER
