36. Nephrotic syndrome in children : functional, morphological and therapeutical aspects
Sammanfattning : Although cure rates of the idiopathic nephrotic syndrome in children have improved because of advances in immunosuppressive therapy, the pathogenesis and course of the disease remain controversial. We have followed children with nephrotic syndrome to study renal function and morphological changes in kidney biopsies and in an experimental study. LÄS MER
37. The relation of blood pressure to dementia in the elderly : a community-based longitudinal study
Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis concerns a community-based, prospective study aimed at investigating the complex relationship between blood pressure (BP) and risk of dementia in a dementia-free cohort (n = 1301) aged >=75 years in Stockholm, Sweden. After baseline survey (1987-1989), the cohort was followed for over 6 years, during which 2 waves of clinical examinations (1991-1993 & 1994-1996) for dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD) (DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria) were performed. 38. Cardiac surgery and the brain - studies on cerebral blood flow autoregulation and mechanisms of cerebral injury
Sammanfattning : Cardiac surgery and the brain - studies on cerebral blood flow autoregulation and mechanisms of cerebral injury Björn Reinsfelt Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Institute of Clinical Sciences, The Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden Abstract Cerebral dysfunction (CD) occurs frequently after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The main causes of CD are thought to be cerebral hypoperfusion, cerebral microembolisation , cerebral inflammation or disruption of the blood brain barrier (BBB). LÄS MER
39. Effects of burns and vasoactive drugs on human skin : Clinical and Experimental studies using microdialysis
Sammanfattning : Patients who require critical care, including those with burns, are affected by a systemic inflammatory reaction, which at times has consequences such as multiple organ dysfunction and failure. It has become increasingly evident that other factors important in the development of organ dysfunction are disturbances at the tissue level, in the microcirculation. LÄS MER
40. SIGNALING MECHANISMS IN SEPSIS-INDUCED IMMUNE DYSFUNCTION
Sammanfattning : Sepsis and subsequent organ failure remain the major cause of mortality in intensive care units in spite of significant research efforts. The lung is the most vulnerable organ affected by early hyper-inflammatory immune response in septic patients. LÄS MER
