  1. 1. Luminal Hypotonicity and Duodenal Functions : An Experimental Study in the Rat

    Författare :Liselotte Pihl; Olof Nylander; Gunnar Flemström; Mats Jodal; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Physiology; luminal alkalinization; mucosal permeability; osmolality; cyclooxygenase-2; rat; duodenum; jejunum; motility; enteric nervous system; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : After drinking water, the fluid quickly leaves the stomach thereby creating a hypotonic luminal environment in the duodenum. This in turn constitutes a potential threat to the integrity of the duodenal epithelium. It therefore seems highly likely that luminal hypotonicity activates physiological mechanisms that aim to increase luminal osmolality. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Regulation of Duodenal Mucosal Barrier Function and Motility : The Impact of Melatonin

    Författare :Anna Sommansson; Markus Sjöblom; Olof Nylander; Oliver Bachmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 51Cr-EDTA; bicarbonate secretion; duodenum; enteric nervous system; enterochromaffin cell; ethanol; hexamethonium; in vivo; mecamylamine; motility; mucosal permeability; parecoxib; rat; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The duodenal mucosa is regularly exposed to acid, digestive enzymes and ingested noxious agents. It is thus critical to maintain a protective barrier to prevent the development of mucosal injury and inflammation, which are often observed in situations when barrier function is impaired. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Role of Melatonin, Neuropeptide S and Short Chain Fatty Acids in Regulation of Duodenal Mucosal Barrier Function and Motility

    Författare :Wan Salman Wan Saudi; Markus Sjöblom; Olof Nylander; Mark Berner-Hansen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 51Cr-EDTA; rat; in vivo; duodenum; enteric nervous system; paralytic ileus; parecoxib; bicarbonate secretion; motility; ethanol; HCl; melatonin; neuropeptide S; short chain fatty acids; chemosensing; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The duodenal epithelium is regularly exposed to HCl, digestive enzymes, bacteria and toxins, and sometimes also to ethanol and drugs. The imbalance of aggressive factors in the intestinal lumen and mucosal barrier function increases the risk of tissue injury and inflammation. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Aspects of hepatoduodenal trauma and fluid therapy in hemorrhagic shock

    Författare :Peep Talving; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Liver injury; epidemiology; population-based study; duodenum injury; gunshot injury; surgery; trauma; emergency care; bleeding; hypotension; hemorrhagic shock; fluid resuscitation; prehospital fluid therapy; morbidity; mortality;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death among young adults and children, accounting for 5 million deaths worldwide on an annual basis. In Sweden alone, 2500 individuals succumb to traumatic injuries yearly. Beyond the burden of death, injuries contribute to a large proportion of disability. LÄS MER

  5. 5. The oesophageal mucosa in reflux disease - endoscopic appearance and tissue structure

    Författare :Anders Edebo; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :oesophagus; reflux; angiotensin; epithelium; endoscopy;

    Sammanfattning : Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is very common in especially the western world. The cardinal symptoms are heartburn or regurgitations and are caused by the reflux of noxious compounds from the stomach/duodenum to the oesophagus. LÄS MER
