26. Viral gastrointestinal infections in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients
Sammanfattning : Gastrointestinal symptoms, and elevated liver enzymes, are common after HSCT, often due to drug toxicity, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) or infections. It is essential to distinguish between GVHD and infection, since both conditions may progress to lethal disease, but require opposite strategies for the immunosuppressive treatment. LÄS MER
27. Visual outcome, ocular findings, and visual processing skills after allogeneic stem cell transplantation in children
Sammanfattning : Background: Stem cell transplantation (SCT) offers a chance of cure in children with leukaemia and other life-threatening haematological, immunological, and metabolic diseases that do not respond to conventional treatment. Pre and post SCT, these children receive irradiation, and/or chemotherapy and immunosuppressive agents which like the primary disease may adversely affect the eye, the central nervous system as well as the posterior visual pathways and potentially threaten vision. 28. A novel prophylactic strategy to minimize stem cell transplantation-related complications
Sammanfattning : Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a curative treatment and sometimes is the only option for patients with hematological malignancies and some types of solid tumors. It is also the first-line treatment for several severe genetic and metabolic disorders. LÄS MER
29. The Human Y chromosome and its role in the developing male nervous system
Sammanfattning : Recent research demonstrated that besides a role in sex determination and male fertility, the Y chromosome is involved in additional functions including prostate cancer, sex-specific effects on the brain and behaviour, graft-versus-host disease, nociception, aggression and autoimmune diseases. The results presented in this thesis include an analysis of sex-biased genes encoded on the X and Y chromosomes of rodents. LÄS MER
30. Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cell transplantation : possible viral complications and alloimmunity
Sammanfattning : In the last few years, human multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) have been increasingly used in novel therapeutic strategies due to their intrinsic immunosuppressive, anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties. In hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), a curable treatment of hematological malignancies and several non-malignant conditions, MSC have been used as a therapy for graft-versus host-disease (GvHD) and other complications.
