  1. 1. The effect on chromosomal stability of some dietary constituents

    Författare :Louise Durling; Per Eriksson; Jan Alexander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Biology; Genotoxicity; chromosomal stability; heterocyclic amines; furan; HMF; folic acid; micronucleus test; comet assay; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : When food is heated, a vast number of compounds are formed. Some of these are known to be toxic. Among these are furan, HMF, PhIP, IQ, and MeIQx, the subjects of this thesis. All these compounds are known or suspected carcinogens but the detailed mechanisms behind their carcinogenicity have not yet been fully examined. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Farm to furan derivatives : Fractionation of agricultural residues and transformation of sugars to chemical building blocks

    Författare :Sara Jonsdottir Glaser; Bioteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biorefinery; sugar beet pulp; wheat bran; agricultural residue; biomass valorisation; fractionation; bio-based platform chemicals; HMF; levulinic acid; heterogeneous catalysis; whole-cell catalysis;

    Sammanfattning : The transition of industrial production from petrochemistry to a more sustainable economy requires the use of carbon neutral, renewable feedstock, which does not compete with food and feed supplies – by-products of farming and agro-food industry offer this possibility. With a limited range of low-value applications today coupled with the need for maximal utilisation of resources, the by-products of farming can be repurposed as feedstock for biorefineries. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : AbstractTransition from fossil- to bio-based economy is a critical step towards reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and hence for achievement of sustainable communities and environment. In order to be fossil-free, the chemical and material industry is in need of carbon-neutral building blocks from renewable resources for the diverse array of products that are currently produced from olefins and aromatics. 4. 4. Efficient Conversion of Lignocellulose Hydrolysates- Yeast Tolerance and Redox Metabolism

    Författare :Tobias Modig; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Metabolism; Biokemi; metabolism; hyperosmotic stress; Biochemistry; S. cerevisiae; anaerobic growth; inhibitor tolerance; furfural; lignocellulose; HMF; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Sammanfattning : The fermentation of lignocellulose hydrolysates by Saccharomyces cerevisiae for ethanol production was investigated. An important problem for the successful conversion of these hydrolysates is that they often are inhibitory. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Towards More Robust Saccharomyces cerevisiae Strains for Lignocellulosic Bioethanol Production: Lessons from process concepts and physiological investigations

    Författare :Magnus Ask; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []

    Sammanfattning : Dwindling oil reserves and the negative impacts of fossil fuels on the environment call for more sustainable energy sources. First-generation bioethanol produced from sugar cane and corn has met some of these needs, but it competes with the food supply for raw materials. LÄS MER
