1. Spatial Modelling of Coastal Fish – Methods and Applications
Sammanfattning : Environmental factors influence species and habitats on multiple scales creating a mosaic of distribution patterns. Studying factors shaping these patterns are central to our understanding of population dynamics and ultimately ecosystem functioning. LÄS MER
2. Patterns of fish larvae and zooplankton distribution in mangrove-seagrass seascapes of East Africa
Sammanfattning : Mangroves and seagrass meadows create coastal seascapes acting as breeding and nursery grounds for many fish species in tropical areas. Despite increased awareness on the role of these coastal habitats to fish, less knowledge is given to fish larvae distribution and population dynamics, limiting the understanding of major drivers of fish population dynamics and fisheries resources management, particularly in understudied regions such as the Western Indian Ocean. 3. Progestagenic Aquatic Contaminants Act as Potent Androgens in Fish : Experimental Studies in Three-spined Stickleback and Zebrafish
Sammanfattning : The extensive use of pharmaceuticals and their poor removal by wastewater treatment plants has led to the emergence of pharmaceutical compounds as global aquatic contaminants. Progestins, the synthetic analogues to progesterone (P4), are receiving increasing attention as contaminants and have been shown to impair reproduction in fish and amphibians at low ng L-1 concentrations. 4. Predator-prey interactions in freshwater systems: The importance of chemical communication
Sammanfattning : Predator released chemical cues provide a valuable source of information to prey organisms that can be used to alter their behaviour in order to reduce predation risk. In this thesis, I have examined under what circumstances chemical cues may be used by prey, and if prey discriminate between different cues. LÄS MER
5. Paleolimnological reconstructions of fish population changes in acidified lakes
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the potential of using subfossil Chaoborus spp. and Daphnia spp. remains preserved in lake sediments to reveal past fish community alterations related to progressive acidification. LÄS MER
