  1. 1. Spatial Modelling of Coastal Fish – Methods and Applications

    Författare :Göran Sundblad; Ulf Bergström; Alfred Sandström; Peter Eklöv; Christian Möllmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; habitat; niche; species distribution modelling; juvenile; fish; larvae; spawning; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi; Biology; Biologi; Biology with specialization in Limnology; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology; Limnologi; Limnology;

    Sammanfattning : Environmental factors influence species and habitats on multiple scales creating a mosaic of distribution patterns. Studying factors shaping these patterns are central to our understanding of population dynamics and ultimately ecosystem functioning. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Patterns of fish larvae and zooplankton distribution in mangrove-seagrass seascapes of East Africa

    Författare :Barnabas Alphonce Tarimo; Martin Gullström; Monika Winder; Mats Björk; Gunilla Rosenqvist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fish larvae; zooplankton; population dynamics; community structure; environmental variables; seasonal variation; habitat use; mangroves; seagrass meadows; seascape connectivity; Tanzania; western Indian Ocean; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Mangroves and seagrass meadows create coastal seascapes acting as breeding and nursery grounds for many fish species in tropical areas. Despite increased awareness on the role of these coastal habitats to fish, less knowledge is given to fish larvae distribution and population dynamics, limiting the understanding of major drivers of fish population dynamics and fisheries resources management, particularly in understudied regions such as the Western Indian Ocean. 3. 3. Progestagenic Aquatic Contaminants Act as Potent Androgens in Fish : Experimental Studies in Three-spined Stickleback and Zebrafish

    Författare :Johan Svensson; Björn Brunström; Ingvar Brandt; Ian Mayer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Pharmaceuticals as contaminants; Progestins; Androgenic properties; Fish; Biologi med inriktning mot ekotoxikologi; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology;

    Sammanfattning : The extensive use of pharmaceuticals and their poor removal by wastewater treatment plants has led to the emergence of pharmaceutical compounds as global aquatic contaminants. Progestins, the synthetic analogues to progesterone (P4), are receiving increasing attention as contaminants and have been shown to impair reproduction in fish and amphibians at low ng L-1 concentrations. 4. 4. Predator-prey interactions in freshwater systems: The importance of chemical communication

    Författare :Kajsa Åbjörnsson; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Ecology; Ekologi; Hydrobiology; trophic cascades; non-lethal effects; benefits; costs; heredity; predator experience; alarmsubstances; dietary cues; amphibian larvae; invertebrates; visibility; fish; behaviour; Predator-prey; chemical cues;

    Sammanfattning : Predator released chemical cues provide a valuable source of information to prey organisms that can be used to alter their behaviour in order to reduce predation risk. In this thesis, I have examined under what circumstances chemical cues may be used by prey, and if prey discriminate between different cues. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Paleolimnological reconstructions of fish population changes in acidified lakes

    Författare :Fredrik Palm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Acidification; Chaoborus; C. flavicans; C. obscuripes; Cyprinids; Daphnia; Fish loss; Fish community composition; Ephippia; Fragmentation; Mandibles; Perch; Roach; Sediments; 210-Pb chronology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the potential of using subfossil Chaoborus spp. and Daphnia spp. remains preserved in lake sediments to reveal past fish community alterations related to progressive acidification. LÄS MER
