1. Fish in the coastal seascape : exploring ecological processes and connectivity for conservation of temperate fish communities
Sammanfattning : The need to understand patterns and processes in the marine environment has never been so profound as today, particularly as anthropogenic pressures upon coastal regions are drastically affecting habitats and species across a vast range. One approach to further understand these patterns and processes is through the use of seascape ecology methods. LÄS MER
2. Paleolimnological reconstructions of fish population changes in acidified lakes
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the potential of using subfossil Chaoborus spp. and Daphnia spp. remains preserved in lake sediments to reveal past fish community alterations related to progressive acidification. LÄS MER
3. Quality of Frozen Rainbow Trout. Effects of different freezing and thawing treatments
Sammanfattning : The effects of different freezing, frozen storage and thawing treatments on the muscle tissue of farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhychus mykiss) were studied. Biochemical measurements were correlated to sensory estimated quality changes. The freezing process affects the proteins, the lipid fractions and the membrane structures in the fish muscle. LÄS MER
4. Crossing barriers: Genetic consequences of translocating wild cleaner fish for aquaculture
Sammanfattning : Several species of fish show a symbiotic cleaning behaviour, where they assist other species by feeding and removing dead skin or ectoparasites. Some of these cleaner fish species are used as a low-cost parasite control in salmon aquaculture, often considered to be more environmentally friendly than other delousing methods. LÄS MER
5. Fish community patterns in Tanzanian mangrove creeks
Sammanfattning : Human beings have exploited the biota of mangrove systems for centuries and fish continue to be one of the main products harvested from these habitats. The assumption of mangroves functioning as recruitment areas for juvenile fish from neighbouring habitats such as seagrass beds and coral reefs is a common argument for conservation and management of mangrove ecosystems.
