  2. 17. Quantitative Trait Evolution in a Changing Environment in a Seed Beetle

    Författare :Lára R. Hallsson; Mats Björklund; Derek A. Roff; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; quantitative trait; genetic variance; environmental change; temperature; seed beetle; sexual dimorphism; plasticity; inheritance; Animal Ecology; Zooekologi;

    Sammanfattning : During the last decades the climate has been changing more rapidly than in the preceding periods. This is for instance characterized by an increase in temperature. Interestingly, such changes in the environment are not necessarily constant over time as they often show high levels of fluctuation. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Sexual Conflict and Gene Expression in Drosophila melanogaster

    Författare :Paolo Innocenti; Edward Morrow; Göran Arnqvist; Andrew G Clark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sexual conflict; sexual selection; male-female coevolution; gene expression; transcriptome; microarrays; sexual dimorphism; Drosophila; Biology; Biologi; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Sexual conflict is broadly defined as a conflict between the evolutionary interests of the two sexes. Depending on the genetic architecture of the traits involved, it can occur at the level of male-female interactions or take the form of selection acting to change the mean of a shared trait against the sign of its genetic correlation. 4. 19. Seeing the invisible: Evolution of wing interference patterns in Hymenoptera, and their application in taxonomy

    Författare :Ekaterina Shevtsova; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chalcidoidea; parasitic wasps; structural colors; visual signaling; cryptic species; sexual dimorphism; wing membrane thickness; wing micro-morphology; wing cuticle ultrastructure;

    Sammanfattning : The remarkably thin transparent wing membranes in tiny wasps may appear to have a simple structural design, but hide a largely unexplored complex of micro-morphological features that serve aerodynamics and may also function in visual signaling. I found that when such small transparent wings are viewed against a dark background they display vivid structural color patterns due to thin film interference, and named them Wing Interference Patterns (WIPs). 5. 20. Sex and violence in lobsters - a smelly business

    Författare :Malin Skog; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dominance; urine signals; recognition; Aggressive behaviours; intermoult mating; sexual dimorphism; European lobster; chemical communication; Homarus gammarus; aesthetasc morphology;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to study the chemical communication involved in aggressive and reproductive behaviours in the European lobster (Homarus gammarus). Both male and female H. gammarus established and maintained dominance, but the sexes used different strategies for dominance maintenance. LÄS MER
