21. Molecular evidence for metazooplankton feeding on filamentous cyanobacteria and picocyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea
Sammanfattning : Interactions between zooplankton and cyanobacteria are complex and system-specific. They play an important role in mediating responses of phytoplankton to changes in nutrient regime and top-down manipulations. LÄS MER
22. Trophic complexity of zooplankton–cyanobacteria interactions in the Baltic Sea : Insights from molecular diet analysis
Sammanfattning : Blooms of nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria (NFC) occur in many freshwater and marine systems, including the Baltic Sea. By fixing dissolved nitrogen, they circumvent general summer nitrogen limitation, while also generating a supply of novel bioavailable nitrogen for non-diazotrophic primary producers and ultimately supporting secondary production. Sammanfattning : In the Baltic Sea dense cyanobacterial blooms occur regularly during late summer. Since the dominant bloom-forming cyanobacteria, Nodularia spp. and Apanizomenon spp. are capable of fixing atmospheric dinitrogen, the macronutrient predominantly limiting their growth is phosphorus. Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the spatial and temporal patterns of Baltic Sea phyto- and zooplankton. Studies of such patterns are important to gain a better understanding of the offshore nutrient dynamics of the Baltic Sea (Papers I and II) and how to manage eutrophication and invasive species in coastal areas (Papers III and IV). Sammanfattning : Future climate scenarios in the Baltic Sea project increasing sea surface temperature, as well as increasing precipitation and river runoff resulting in decreased salinity. These changes can severely impact the dynamics and function of brackish water communities, specifically phytoplankton. LÄS MER
