  1. 1. Functional genomics of the Baltic Sea cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena in relation to nitrogen fixation, heterocyst differentiation and toxin production

    Författare :Simina Vintila; Rehab El-Shehawy; Peter Lindblad; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cyanobacteria; Nodularia; nitrogen fixation; heterocyst; nitrogenase; ammonium; phosphate; nodularin; Baltic Sea; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Nodularia spumigena is a filamentous, heterocystous cyanobacterium that dominates the annual, toxic cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea. The blooms are believed to have increased in recent years, due to eutrophication by phosphate and/or nitrogen. Toxicity of these blooms is well-documented and attributed to the hepatotoxin nodularin. 2. 2. On the ecophysiology of Baltic cyanobacteria focusing on bottom-up factors

    Författare :Malin Mohlin; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Allelopathy; Aphanizomenon sp.; Baltic Sea; Cyanobacteria; Diazotrophic; Multi-factorial; Nitrogen; Nodularin; photosynthetic active radiation; Phosphorus; ultraviolet radiation; UV-A; UV-B;

    Sammanfattning : Cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea are dominated by diazotrophic cyanobacteria, i.e. Aphanizomenon sp. and Nodularia spumigena. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Summer cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea - implications for copepod recruitment

    Författare :Hedvig Hogfors; Sture Hansson; Wim Kimmerer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cyanobacteria; Calanoid copepods; Food web interactions; Harmful algae blooms; Zooplankton; Nodularin; Allelopathy; Baltic Sea; Biochemical markers; RNA-based indices; Acidification; Global Climate Change; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : During summer, the Baltic Sea is subjected to the world’s largest cyanobacterial blooms. These blooms are linked to eutrophication and raise many questions concerning their effects on the ecosystem. To understand their impacts on the food web dynamics, it is essential to assess growth responses of grazers to these cyanobacteria. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Monitoring the cellular phosphate status in bloom-forming cyanobacteria of the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Sara Jonasson; Erik Söderbäck; Hans C. P. Matthjis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cyanobacteria; Baltic Sea; phosphorus; cyanotoxin; nodularin; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : In the Baltic Sea dense cyanobacterial blooms occur regularly during late summer. Since the dominant bloom-forming cyanobacteria, Nodularia spp. and Apanizomenon spp. are capable of fixing atmospheric dinitrogen, the macronutrient predominantly limiting their growth is phosphorus. 5. 5. Baltic Sea phytoplankton in a changing environment

    Författare :Mireia Bertos-Fortis; Catherine Legrand; Ilana Berman-Frank; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phytoplankton ecology; cyanobacteria; dynamics; environmental factors; successional patterns; interactions; life strategies; non-ribosomal peptides; diversity; nodularin; N. spumigena; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Future climate scenarios in the Baltic Sea project increasing sea surface temperature, as well as increasing precipitation and river runoff resulting in decreased salinity. These changes can severely impact the dynamics and function of brackish water communities, specifically phytoplankton. LÄS MER
