  1. 26. Monitoring the cellular phosphate status in bloom-forming cyanobacteria of the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Sara Jonasson; Erik Söderbäck; Hans C. P. Matthjis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cyanobacteria; Baltic Sea; phosphorus; cyanotoxin; nodularin; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : In the Baltic Sea dense cyanobacterial blooms occur regularly during late summer. Since the dominant bloom-forming cyanobacteria, Nodularia spp. and Apanizomenon spp. are capable of fixing atmospheric dinitrogen, the macronutrient predominantly limiting their growth is phosphorus. 2. 27. Studies of Baltic Sea plankton - spatial and temporal patterns

    Författare :Helena Höglander; Ulf Larsson; Christoph Humborg; Anna-Stiina Heiskanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phytoplankton; Vertical distribution; Sedimentation; Baltic Sea; Cyanobacteria; Stable istopes; Cercopagis pengoi; Zooplankton; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the spatial and temporal patterns of Baltic Sea phyto- and zooplankton. Studies of such patterns are important to gain a better understanding of the offshore nutrient dynamics of the Baltic Sea (Papers I and II) and how to manage eutrophication and invasive species in coastal areas (Papers III and IV). 3. 28. Baltic Sea phytoplankton in a changing environment

    Författare :Mireia Bertos-Fortis; Catherine Legrand; Ilana Berman-Frank; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phytoplankton ecology; cyanobacteria; dynamics; environmental factors; successional patterns; interactions; life strategies; non-ribosomal peptides; diversity; nodularin; N. spumigena; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Future climate scenarios in the Baltic Sea project increasing sea surface temperature, as well as increasing precipitation and river runoff resulting in decreased salinity. These changes can severely impact the dynamics and function of brackish water communities, specifically phytoplankton. LÄS MER

  4. 29. Significance of N2 fixing planktonic symbioses for open ocean ecosystems

    Författare :Marcus Stenegren; Rachel A. Foster; Agneta Andersson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nitrogen fixation; diazotrophs; symbiosis; DDA; cyanobacteria; qPCR; piecewise SEM; microarray; tropics; subtropics; marine; open ocean; Richelia; Calothrix; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Di-nitrogen (N2) fixers, also called diazotrophs, are able to reduce atmospheric N2 into bioavailable nitrogen, giving them an advantage in open ocean regions with low dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations. The focus of this thesis are three lineages of symbiotic heterocystous filamentous types (het-1, het-2 and het-3), that associate with several genera of microalgae called diatoms (collectively referred to as Diatom Diazotroph Associations, DDAs). 5. 30. Phosphorus recycling in brackish and marine environments - Sediment investigations in situ in the Baltic Sea and the By Fjord

    Författare :Lena Viktorsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phosphorus; sediment; anoxia; Baltic Sea; By Fjord; benthic flux;

    Sammanfattning : The phosphorus load to the oceans from land started to increase since around 1950 when man started to mine phosphorus-mineral from phosphorus-rich soils and bedrock. The increased use of phosphorus fertilizers in agriculture together with the growth of coastal cities increased the load of phosphorus to the coastal ocean where plankton production flourished.
