  1. 1. Recruitment from resting stages among bloom-forming cyanobacteria

    Författare :Annika Ståhl-Delbanco; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; marine biology; Hydrobiology; resting stage; Cyanobacteria; recruitment; algal bloom;

    Sammanfattning : Cyanobacteria are known to form heavy blooms in eutrophicated freshwaters and also form resting stages, associated with the sediments, during harsh growth conditions. These resting stages can serve as inoculum for pelagic populations and function as a potential source for bloom formations. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Physical and biological dispersal barriers in invasive, bloom-forming microalgae

    Författare :Ingrid Sassenhagen; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Dispersal barriers; microalgae; phenotypic differentiation; population genetics; priority effects;

    Sammanfattning : For a long time microorganisms were assumed to have unlimited dispersal due to their small size and high cell numbers. Most microbial species can be transported by water currents, in water droplets by wind and attached to other organisms. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Single-cell population genetics and dispersal limitation of a bloom-forming microalga

    Författare :Raphael Gollnisch; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Gonyostomum semen; algal blooms; invasive species; population structure; RADseq; single-cell whole genome amplification; multiple displacement amplification; calcium; pH; iron;

    Sammanfattning : Microalgal range expansions are increasing in frequency and magnitude worldwide mostly due to anthropogenic factors. However, they often remain unnoticed until mass development (algal blooms) occurs due to difficulties in detection when population densities are low. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Monitoring the cellular phosphate status in bloom-forming cyanobacteria of the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Sara Jonasson; Erik Söderbäck; Hans C. P. Matthjis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cyanobacteria; Baltic Sea; phosphorus; cyanotoxin; nodularin; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : In the Baltic Sea dense cyanobacterial blooms occur regularly during late summer. Since the dominant bloom-forming cyanobacteria, Nodularia spp. and Apanizomenon spp. are capable of fixing atmospheric dinitrogen, the macronutrient predominantly limiting their growth is phosphorus. 5. 5. Trophic complexity of zooplankton–cyanobacteria interactions in the Baltic Sea : Insights from molecular diet analysis

    Författare :Nisha H. Motwani; Elena Gorokhova; Jakob Walve; Catherine Legrand; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bloom-forming filamentous cyanobacteria; diazotrophs; picocyanobacteria; zooplankton; grazing; molecular diet analysis; stable isotopes; biochemical indices; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Blooms of nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria (NFC) occur in many freshwater and marine systems, including the Baltic Sea. By fixing dissolved nitrogen, they circumvent general summer nitrogen limitation, while also generating a supply of novel bioavailable nitrogen for non-diazotrophic primary producers and ultimately supporting secondary production.
