  1. 16. Neuropsychological Function in Relation to Structural and Functional Brain Changes in Alzheimer’s Disease

    Författare :Eva Elgh; Jarl Risberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Alzheimer´s disease; neuropsychological function; episodic memory; hippocampus; prefrontal cortex; brain imaging; MRI; fMRI; SPECT; LHPA-axis; cortisol; geriatrik; Geriatrics;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this doctoral thesis was to study neuropsychological function in relation to structural and functional brain changes in Alzheimer´s disease (AD). In the first study relations between hippocampal volume, neuropsychological function and limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (LHPA) axis disturbances in AD were investigated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). 2. 17. Long-term effects of pre- and postnatal glucocorticoid treatment in congenital adrenal hyperplasia

    Författare :Leif Karlsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is an autosomal recessive disorder mostly caused by mutations in the CYP21A2 gene leading to impaired production of cortisol and aldosterone. Precursors in the steroidogenic pathway are shunted to pathways of androgen production and elevated levels of androgens may cause virilization of the external genitalia in females with CAH already in utero. 3. 18. On the actions of neurotrophic factors on the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla

    Författare :Petter Förander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Neural crest; chromaffin cells; neurotrophic factors; NGF; NT-3; NT4; CNTF; GDNF; TGFß; FGF2; glucocorticoids; Intra oculartransplantation ; primary cultures; neurite outgrowth;

    Sammanfattning : Chromaffin cells producing adrenaline or noradrenaline are the predominant cell type in the adrenal medulla, but ganglion cells and Schwann cells are also present. All cells of the adrenal medulla are derived from the neural crest, which is a transient neuroectoderm-derived embryonic structure. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia : pre-and postnatal treatment effects on cognition, behavior and brain resting-state functional connectivity

    Författare :Valeria Messina; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), an autosomal recessive disorder affecting adrenal steroid synthesis, is linked to impaired adrenal synthesis of cortisol and aldosterone. The increased production of androgen precursors in the adrenal cortex during fetal life leads to the virilization of external genitalia in girls with CAH already in utero. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Characterization and expression of subtypes of nicotinic receptors in brain and adrenal medulla : with focus on development, Alzheimer's disease and transgenic animal models

    Författare :Malahat Mousavi Tasouji; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The cholinergic nicotinic receptors (nAChRs) seem to play an important role in numerous important physiological processes in brain as well as peripheral tissues of man. In first trimester human brain mRNA levels for the alpha3, alpha4, alpha5, alpha7, beta2, beta3, and beta4 nAChR subunits and binding sites were detected at 5 weeks of gestation. LÄS MER
