11. The Perfect Storm? Gluten and type 1 diabetes
Sammanfattning : Aim: The general objective of the present research was to study the association between type 1 diabetes and celiac disease, and the effects of dietary gluten on the risk of developing type 1 diabetes. More specific aims were as follows: to estimate the prevalence of celiac-disease-associated autoantibodies in children with type 1 diabetes; to study the connection between non-HLA genetic risk markers and autoantibodies associated with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease during the first year after diagnosis of type 1 diabetes; to investigate the effect of gluten on the risk of developing type 1 diabetes; to evaluate the impact of perinatal factors on the risk of developing both type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. 14. Aspects of immunogenetics, infections, and nutrition on the risk of celiac disease autoimmunity in an Ethiopian pediatric birth cohort
Sammanfattning : Background: Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease of the intestine in genetically susceptible individuals caused by loss of tolerance to the storage proteins (gluten) in wheat, rye, and barley. Little is known about CD and associated risk factors in Sub-Saharan African countries including Ethiopia. LÄS MER
15. Studies of the Role of the Gastrointestinal Tract in Children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA)
Sammanfattning : Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common rheumatic disease in children, but its cause is not fully established. Changes in the intestinal canal and an unfavourable composition of gut bacteria have been suggested as factors that can increase the risk of developing JIA and influence the disease course. LÄS MER
