  1. 1. Process Utility Performance Evaluation and Enhancements in the Traditional Sugar Cane Industry

    Författare :Eyerusalem Deresse Birru; Andrew Martin; Catharina Erlich; Hailong Li; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Sugar cane; energy saving; heat loss; steady state; transient state; CO2 emission; absorption chiller; pellet; bagasse drying; energy perfor-mance; traditional mills; modern mills; waste water; surplus power; Energy Technology; Energiteknik;

    Sammanfattning : The need to achieve sustainable development has led to devising various approaches for the efficient utilization of natural resources. Renewable energy technology and energy efficiency measures feature prominently in this regard, and in particular for industries such as sugar production:  the sugar cane industry’s eponymous feedstock is a renewable resource, and mills have potential for increased energy savings via improvements to cogeneration units, electric drive retrofitting, and other measures. 2. 2. Aroma and Flavor in Liquid Beet Sugar Processing

    Författare :Per Pihlsgård; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; liquid beet sugar; aroma release; liquid beet sugar process; electronic nose; aroma; sensory analysis; macromolecules; flavor; GC-MS; GC-olfactometry;

    Sammanfattning : Production of liquid beet sugar, a product of increasing importance for the food industry, involves many different compounds exhibiting aroma. Aroma compounds are introduced with the raw material, the sugar beets, but also formed as a result of sugar degradation (caramelization and Maillard reaction) or by contamination from process steps, such as adsorbents and ion exchangers. 3. 3. Egypt Ignited : How Steam Power Arrived on the Nile and Integrated Egypt into Industrial Capitalism (1820s-76)

    Författare :Amr Ahmed; Humanekologi; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Energy history; history of technology; environmental history; steam power; capitalism; Industrial Revolution; Global warming; Egypt; modern history; agrarian production; biofuels; Sugar industry; cotton; Energihistoria; Teknikhistoria; Miljöhistoria; Ångmaskin; Kapitalism; Industriella revolutionen; global uppvärmning; Egypten; Modern historia; Jordbruksproduktion; biobränslen; Sockerindustrin; Bomull;

    Sammanfattning : How did fossil-fuelled technology find its way to Egypt on its way to global dominance? This thesis presents a socioecological history of energy technologies in agrarian production in pre-colonial Egypt (1820s – 76). It situates them in the nineteenth century, understood as the beginning of the epoch of the Capitalocene; and in Egypt’s case, this is simultaneously part of the rise of Britain’s fossil empire. 4. 4. Metabolic engineering of starch synthesis in barley

    Författare :Staffan Ahlandsberg; Sadequr Rahman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hordeum vulgare; plant breeding; starch; genetic engineering; transgenic plants; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Starch is an important industrial raw material both for food and non-food purposes. In plants, starch is deposited in the leaf and in the storage tissues such as seed endosperm, roots or tubers. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Study of possibilities and some problems of using cane residues as fuel in a gas turbine for power generation in the sugar industry

    Författare :Mohamed Gabra; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Energy Engineering; Energiteknik;

    Sammanfattning : The potential of cane residuals as a source of energy could help many developing countries to improve their balance of payments by decreasing fossil fuels imports and increasing the electrical power production. A substantial increase of the electricity output in the sugar industry could be achieved by using a combined gas turbine/steam turbine integrated with gasifier supplying combustible gas to the gas turbine combustor.
