11. Characterization of toxicological effects of a novel in vivo benzo[a]pyrene metabolite in colonic cells
Sammanfattning : Cancer of the colon and rectum is the third most common cancer form in the world. Where the majority of cases fall into the category of sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC), lifestyle and diet have been found to be important risk factors associated with CRC. LÄS MER
12. Male Subfertility and Prostate Cancer Risk: Epidemiological and Genetic Studies
Sammanfattning : Androgen action plays a pivotal role in male reproductive tract physiology and pathology. The androgen receptor (AR) gene harbors two codon repeat tracts: the CAG and GGN repeats, encoding corresponding amino acid sequences of variable length; the polyglutamine and polyglycine stretches, respectively. 13. Expression and regulation of Rad51 in human cells
Sammanfattning : Double strand breaks (DSBs) can be caused by exogenous DNA damaging agents or by endogenous processes, and may lead to chromosomal breakage and rearrangement resulting in apoptosis or tumorigenesis. The repair of DSBs in higher eukaryotes is to a large extent accomplished by homologous recombination (HR), a process in which DNA from a complementary strand is used as a template for repair synthesis. 14. Tolerance and injury mechanisms in the developing CNS
Sammanfattning : The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury has been the subject of extensive research yet a neuroprotective strategy to limit its progression is lacking.OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present thesis was to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in neonatal HI, specifically to study I) the involvement of Poly ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-1 in HI, II) the effect of hypoxic PC on brain injury and function after HI in the long-term perspective, III) the effect of hypoxic PC on global gene expression, in particular the involvement of apoptosis related genes, and IV) the vascular response to hypoxic PC. 15. Proteasome inhibition in the regulation of natural killer cell function and multiple myeloma cell apoptosis
Sammanfattning : Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematologic malignancy mostly occurring in the elderly and characterized by an expansion of monoclonal plasma cells in the bone marrow and increased monoclonal immunoglobulin in plasma. The outcome of this disease has been greatly improved due to introduction of new drugs. LÄS MER
