1. Constructing and contesting the legitimacy of private forest governance : The case of forest certification in Sweden
Sammanfattning : In recent decades, political scientists have devoted substantial attention to the changing role of the state towards more inclusion of non-state actors in policymaking. This deliberative turn, or move towards governance, may signal inability to handle complex problems without cooperation with nonstate actors. LÄS MER
2. Direct and indirect pressures of climate change on nutrient and carbon cycling in northern forest ecosystems : Dynamic modelling for policy support
Sammanfattning : Northern forest ecosystems play an important role in mitigating climate change by sequestrating carbon (C), while additionally providing and regulating other ecosystem services. A majority of the Swedish environmental quality objects (EQOs) that guide Swedish environmental policy and management are associated with the forest, and they have proven difficult to achieve. 3. The European forest trade model : EU policy and the impact on forest raw material use
Sammanfattning : The main purpose of this study is to develop a numerical simulation model of the European trade in forest fuels and analyse the possible trade levels for forest fuels in Europe following the implementation of EU energy policy. The White Paper and the RES-E Directive have been designed partly to support an increased use of forest fuels as sources for energy generation. LÄS MER
4. Optimal thinning : a theoretical investigation on individual-tree level
Sammanfattning : Paper I: In paper I, we asked how a tree should optimally allocate its resources to maximize its fitness. We let a subject tree grow in an environment shaded by nearby competing trees. The competitors were assumed to have reached maturity and had stopped growing, thus creating a static light environment for the subject tree to grow in. LÄS MER
5. Incentives and Forest Reform: Evidence from China
Sammanfattning : Chapter I: Forest Devolution Reform in China: A Trigger for Investment or Deforestation? I investigate whether and how the devolution of forestland to households in China triggered investment in forestland, and its effect on forest resource conditions. The investment analysis is based on a panel dataset of a two-round survey of 3,000 households in eight provinces before and after the implementation of the forest devolution reform, while the analysis of resource conditions is based on satellite imagery on forest cover and vegetation during 2001-2012.
