1. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Clinical Diagnosis : Exploring and Improving the Examination Chain
Sammanfattning : Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is a relatively new imaging technique, first reported in 1992, which enables mapping of brain functions with high spatial resolution. Functionally active areas are distinguished by a small signal increase mediated by changes in local blood oxygenation in response to neural activity. LÄS MER
2. Analysis and development of strategies for magnetic resonance functional neuroimaging
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on strategies for oxygenation-sensitive MRI that are designed to measure alterations in brain physiology induced by changes in neuronal activity. In a first study, it was shown that the temporal evolution of BOLD MRI signal changes in response to both brief and sustained visual activation are equally well visible in FLASH and EPI recordings. 3. Optimal thinning : a theoretical investigation on individual-tree level
Sammanfattning : Paper I: In paper I, we asked how a tree should optimally allocate its resources to maximize its fitness. We let a subject tree grow in an environment shaded by nearby competing trees. The competitors were assumed to have reached maturity and had stopped growing, thus creating a static light environment for the subject tree to grow in. LÄS MER
4. Elastic and inelastic scattering effects in conductance measurements at the nanoscale : A theoretical treatise
Sammanfattning : Elastic and inelastic interactions are studied in tunnel junctions of a superconducting nanoelectromechanical setup and in response to resent experimental superconducting scanning tunneling microscope findings on a paramagnetic molecule. In addition, the electron density of molecular graphene is modeled by a scattering theory approach in very good agreement with experiment. LÄS MER
5. Towards Individualized Drug Dosage : General Methods and Case Studies
Sammanfattning : Progress in individualized drug treatment is of increasing importance, promising to avoid much human suffering and reducing medical treatment costs for society. The strategy is to maximize the therapeutic effects and minimize the negative side effects of a drug on individual or group basis. LÄS MER
