    Sammanfattning : This study is a social anthropological approach to the role of bullfighting in the symbolic creation of Spain. By analysing the historical circumstances that turned an ancient ritual of fertility into the expression of a victorious nation and its dominant elite, this work discusses the role of rituals in the generaton of ordered social life through a process of symbolic negotiaton of power.     Sammanfattning : Why did Ghana, a country that was favourably endowed in its economic and social life, and judged to have considerable head start over other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa in the 1950s, and for which all predictions pointed to a bright future, come to experience a classic socioeconomic decline and is now struggling to survive?This study endeavours to explain how and why this happened. Combining sociological, economic and political, as well as institutional perspectives at the methodological level, the study focuses on the interplay between state politics and socioeconomic development.     Sammanfattning : After disarming and demobilizing, why do some ex-combatants re-engage in organized vio-lence, while others do not? Even though former fighters have been identified as a major source of insecurity in post-civil war societies due to their military know-how, there have been few efforts to systematically examine this puzzle. This study fills this research gap by comparing the presence or absence of organized violence in different ex-combatant communi-ties – all the former fighters that used to belong to the same armed faction and who share a common, horizontal identity based on shared war-and peacetime experiences. Since the monarch embodied supreme wordly power, the way in which daily life at court was organised was of great importance.
