  2. 2. Representing sounds and spellings : Phonological decline and compensatory working memory in acquired hearing impairment

    Författare :Elisabet Classon; Jerker Rönnberg; Mary Rudner; Mikael Johansson; Nathalie Phillips; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Acquired hearing impairment; phonology; WMC; reading span; Förvärvad hörselnedsättning; fonologi; arbetsminne; lässpann;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examined phonological processing in adults with postlingually acquired moderate-to-severe hearing impairment (HI) and whether explicit working memory processing of phonology and individual working memory capacity (WMC) can compensate for degraded phonological representations in this group (papers I-III). A second aim was to provide reference data for a test of WMC, the reading span test, and to examine the relation between reading span test performance and speech recognition in noise in a larger sample of 50-89 year olds with HI (paper IV). 3. 3. Functional neurobiology in normal aging, mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease : focus on on visuospatial processing using functional magnetic resonance imaging

    Författare :Patrizia Vannini; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Alzheimer s disease; brain function; functional magnetic resonance imaging; mild cognitive impairment; normal aging; task demand; visuospatial processing;

    Sammanfattning : With the proportional increase of the aging population in the coming decades as well as a continuously augmenting life expectancy, the effects of neurodegeneration on brain function are a topic of increasing importance. Of special interest are tools that probe the functional consequences of neurodegenerative processes and possible compensatory mechanisms that might emerge. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Factors associated with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia

    Författare :Emilia Schwertner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Most people with dementia suffer behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD). These symptoms add to caregiver stress and accelerate cognitive decline. The etiology of BPSD is complex, with multiple factors influencing symptom manifestation. The ability to accommodate and communicate needs decreases with cognitive deterioration. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Social Phobia. From Epidemiology to Brain Function

    Författare :Tomas Furmark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Psychology; Anxiety; brain; epidemiology; fear; neuroimaging; neurotransmitters; positron emission tomography; prevalence; serotonin; social phobia; subtypes; treatment; Psykologi; Psychology; Psykologi; Psychology; psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Social phobia is a disabling anxiety disorder characterized by an excessive fear of negative evaluation in social situations. The present thesis explored the epidemiology and neurobiology of the disorder. By means of a mailed questionnaire, the point prevalence of social phobia in the Swedish general population was estimated at 15.6%. LÄS MER
