1. Representing sounds and spellings : Phonological decline and compensatory working memory in acquired hearing impairment
Sammanfattning : This thesis examined phonological processing in adults with postlingually acquired moderate-to-severe hearing impairment (HI) and whether explicit working memory processing of phonology and individual working memory capacity (WMC) can compensate for degraded phonological representations in this group (papers I-III). A second aim was to provide reference data for a test of WMC, the reading span test, and to examine the relation between reading span test performance and speech recognition in noise in a larger sample of 50-89 year olds with HI (paper IV). 2. Magnetic resonance imaging in dementia : a study of brain white matter changes
Sammanfattning : Non-specific white matter changes (WMC) in the brain are common findings in the elderly population. Although they are frequently seen in non-demented persons, WMC seem to be more common in demented patients. The significance of these changes, as well as their pathophysiological background is incompletely understood. 3. Cerebral white matter changes in patients with cognitive impairment - clinical and pathophysiological aspects
Sammanfattning : Cerebral white matter changes (WMC), detected with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), represent a common condition in elderly people. However, the prognostic, symptomatological and biochemical constituents of WMC are only partially known. LÄS MER
4. Gastrointestinal Permeability and Motility in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Sammanfattning : Synchronized motility, permeability and secretory (hormones and enzymes) events are integral to normal physiology. Smooth muscle syncytium operates with enteric nervous system (ENS) and endocrine signalling to accommodate, mix and control passage of ingested materials. LÄS MER
5. The role of working memory capacity in auditory distraction
Sammanfattning : The basis of individual differences in susceptibility to auditory distraction has been a research field largely ignored. The current work presents four studies demonstrating that individual differences in working memory capacity (WMC) are related to the magnitude of auditory distraction. LÄS MER
