11. Adapt, Survive or Die - Metabolic Imbalances and the Enteric Nervous System
Sammanfattning : Abstract: In this thesis the questions “do enteric neurons adapt to survive in conditions of obesity/type 2-diabetes (T2D) related metabolic imbalances? Or do they die?” are asked. Obese and T2D patients have high rates of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. LÄS MER
12. Macroscopic Modeling of Metabolic Reaction Networks and Dynamic Identification of Elementary Flux Modes by Column Generation
Sammanfattning : In this work an intersection between optimization methods and animal cell culture modeling is considered. We present optimization based methods for analyzing and building models of cell culture; models that could be used when designing the environment cells are cultivated in, i.e., medium. LÄS MER
13. Systems Biology of Type 2 Diabetes in Skeletal Muscle
Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a heterogeneous and complex disease that currently affects more than 350 million people worldwide. A wide range of risk factors influence the pathogenesis of T2D, including genetic and epigenetic components, as well as controllable factors such as diet, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle. LÄS MER
14. Enhancing prediction and causal inference in metabolic dyshomeostasis
Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on two globally prevalent diseases: i) non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and ii) type 2 diabetes (T2D), with an overall aim of improving prediction and causal inference in the context of these conditions. Our projects were mainly conducted using IMI DIRECT and UK Biobank datasets including multi-omics data, extensive environmental exposures, and biological intermediates. LÄS MER
15. Genetic analysis of autoimmune and metabolic traits in chickens
Sammanfattning : Studying how changes in DNA affect organisms and gene functions, can give us an increased understanding of the genetic regulation of diseases and metabolic traits. Chickens and other farm animals have long been used as a tool to study human diseases and other complex traits since they provide an excellent opportunity to study these traits in a controlled environment.
