6. Type 2 Cystatins. Studies on the role of the major cystatin, cystatin C, in mice and on properties and distribution of the novel human cystatins F, G, H and I
Sammanfattning : The aim the thesis work was to study the human cystatins C, E/M, F, G, H and I both in vivo and in vitro. A mouse devoid of cystatin C was used for the cystatin C studies. The levels of cystatins C, E/M and F were measured in pleural effusion samples of patients with various lung disorders. LÄS MER
7. Oxidative stress, macrophages, iron, and atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Macrophages have a great capacity to take up exogenous material, such as oxidatively modified low density lipoproteins (oxLDL) and different sources of iron containing structures. OxLDL is taken up into macrophage lysosomes by receptor-mediated endocytosis, but poorly degraded, resulting in foam-cell formation. LÄS MER
8. Effects of reactive oxygen species on the cellular vacuolar apparatus
Sammanfattning : Reactive and potentially harmful oxygen species occur, and are continuously formed, in all cells of a living organism. Increased production of these metabolites are seen in a number of pathological states, for instance in inflammatory foci or during reoxygenation of ischemic tissue. LÄS MER
9. Cathepsin D released from lysosomes mediates apoptosis
Sammanfattning : Last year (2002), the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to three scientists who have conducted pioneer research on programmed cell death. In the human body, more than a thousand billion cells are created every day, and an equal number die, thus programmed cell death, or apoptosis, is an important mechanism for maintaining tissue homeostasis and protecting against disease. 10. Free radicals in cellular pathology : Mechanisms behind lipofucin formation in cultured myocardial cells
Sammanfattning : Lipofuscin, or age pigment, may be defined as a yellowish-brown,autofluorescent, protein and lipid containing pigment that accumulates inthe lysosomal vacuome of a variety of post-mitotic cell types in man andanimals during aging. Lipofuscin is the end product of peroxidation, fragmentation and polymerization of proteins and lipids. LÄS MER
