1. Engineering enzymes towards biotherapeutic applications using ancestral sequence reconstruction
Sammanfattning : Enzymes are versatile biocatalysts that fulfill essential functions in all forms of life and, therefore, play an important role in health and disease. One specific application of enzymes in life science is their use as biopharmaceuticals, which typically benefits from high catalytic activity and stability. LÄS MER
2. Effects of Total Parenteral Nutrition on the Exocrine and Endocrine Pancreas. An Experimental Study
Sammanfattning : During total parenteral nutrition (TPN) adequate nutrition is provided intravenously and the enteral route is bypassed. The integrity of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, however, is dependent on the passage of food through it. This thesis deals with the effects of TPN on the pancreas and the parotid glands. LÄS MER
3. Quality of Frozen Rainbow Trout. Effects of different freezing and thawing treatments
Sammanfattning : The effects of different freezing, frozen storage and thawing treatments on the muscle tissue of farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhychus mykiss) were studied. Biochemical measurements were correlated to sensory estimated quality changes. The freezing process affects the proteins, the lipid fractions and the membrane structures in the fish muscle. LÄS MER
4. The Lysosomal-Mitochondrial Axis Theory of Apoptosis
Sammanfattning : In many cases, apoptosis may be initiated by a minor lysosomal destabilization, which some time later is followed by a secondary, more pronounced, lysosomal rupture. After exposure to low concentrations of sphingosine, a lysosomotropic detergent, Jurkat and J774 cells underwenr apoptotic cell death, while cells exposed to higher concentrations of this agent showed necrosis. 5. Cellular mechanisms involved in bone resorption
Sammanfattning : The effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH), prostaglandins (PGE1, PGE2, PGF2a), cAMP, cAMP-analogues, phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors and la (OH) D3 on bone resorption and associated cellular process have been studied in a bone organ culture system using half- calvaria from 6-7 day-old mice. Bone resorption was assessed by determining the release of calcium (Ca2+), inorganic phosphate (Pi) and 45Ca from the calvarial bones to the culture media. LÄS MER
