6. Water film-mediated mineralogical transformations and photocatalytic reactions
Sammanfattning : Mineral particles capture water vapor in the atmosphere in the form of water films that are only few monolayers thick. Water films form nanoscale hydration environments that mediate a wide range of important reactions in nature and technology. LÄS MER
7. Tailoring residue-derived carbon materials for the removal of wastewater contaminants : adsorption and surface properties
Sammanfattning : The availability of effective, low-cost wastewater treatment is necessary for increased water recycling and the prevention of environmental pollution on a global scale. Adsorption on activated carbons is commonly applied in wastewater treatment, but the high cost of conventional activated carbons limits the use of this technique. LÄS MER
8. Tunable surfaces : using polyoxoniobates and -tantalates as molecular building blocks
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes and explains the use of aqueous polyoxometalates (POMs), as molecular building blocks in the fabrication of tunable solid-state materials, such as thin films. Microwave irradiation in the synthesis of Nb10, Nb6 and Ta6 is a rapid and efficient alternative to conventional hydrothermal methods, while offering equal – if not greater yields – of product. 9. Surface and Bulk Reactivity of Iron Oxyhydroxides : A Molecular Perspective
Sammanfattning : Iron oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) mineral plays an important role in a variety of atmospheric, terrestrial and technological settings. Molecular resolution of reactions involving these minerals is thereby required to develop a fundamental understanding of their contributions in processes taking place in the atmosphere, Earth’s upper crust as well as the hydrosphere. 10. Waste incineration residues : Persistent organic pollutants in flue gas and fly ash from waste incineration
Sammanfattning : Modern societies produce large quantities of municipal solid waste (MSW), which is commonly disposed of by incineration. This has several advantages: it reduces the waste’s volume and sterilizes it while also enabling energy recovery. LÄS MER
