11. Seeing the invisible: Evolution of wing interference patterns in Hymenoptera, and their application in taxonomy
Sammanfattning : The remarkably thin transparent wing membranes in tiny wasps may appear to have a simple structural design, but hide a largely unexplored complex of micro-morphological features that serve aerodynamics and may also function in visual signaling. I found that when such small transparent wings are viewed against a dark background they display vivid structural color patterns due to thin film interference, and named them Wing Interference Patterns (WIPs). 12. Drosophila Sensory Neuroethology
Sammanfattning : Animals, like humans, need to perceive their surroundings via their senses in order to make sensible behavioral decisions, reproduce successfully, and survive. Animals are equipped with audition, vision, thermosensation, hygrosensation, mechanosensation, magnetoception, gustation, and olfaction, which detects physical and chemical changes in their habitats. 13. Analysis of Genes and Proteins Involved in Wood Formation
14. On the way of making plants smell like moths - a synthetic biology approach
Sammanfattning : Moth caterpillars are major agricultural pests in many parts of the world. In general female moths attract male mates with their pheromone over long distance. Most of the described moth pheromones belong to the same class of chemical compounds, fatty acid derivatives that are produced de novo in the pheromone gland. LÄS MER
15. There and back again : The neural basis of migration in the Bogong moth
Sammanfattning : The Bogong moth (Agrotis infusa) is a small, night-active Australian moth that has a remarkable lifestyle. Afterhatching from its pupa in spring, it migrates over 1000 km to the Australian Alps, where it spends the summer incool alpine caves. LÄS MER
