1. Adseverin – An Immune-Specific Target of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-Dioxin
Sammanfattning : The environmental pollutant 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) induces thymus atrophy and immunosuppression in all animal species examined and these effects constitute a potential risk to humans. TCDD can via binding to the intracellular aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), modulate transcription of a number of genes and the aim of this thesis has been to identify such genes, which may explain the mechanisms behind TCDD-mediated immunotoxicity. 2. In vitro and in vivo studies on the toxicology of di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) : Effects on reproductive, endocrine, and immune systems
Sammanfattning : Chemical pollution is an increasing societal problem and has a major impact on human and environmental health. One important source of chemical pollution is plastic, which contains many different compounds with often largely unknown hazards. LÄS MER
3. Immunohepatotoxicity of the persistent environmental pollutants perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS)
Sammanfattning : Perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), manufactured for a variety of industrial and consumer applications, are ubiquitous environmental pollutants. Their accumulation in humans and wildlife raises serious health concerns. Here, we examined the potential effects of PFOA and PFOS on the innate immune system in mice. LÄS MER
4. Harm and harm reduction in smokeless tobacco users. An in vitro and clinical study
Sammanfattning : Background: This thesis describes the effects of smokeless tobacco (ST) and its derivatives on the oral mucosa; the development of, and results of applying a cessation program for snuff users with long and extensive exposure; and the persistent clinical and histomorphological changes after cessation. Methods: Three of the studies were open prospective non-randomized clinical intervention trials using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) of either 4 mg nicotine chewing gum or 2 mg nicotine lozenges. 5. Developmental immunotoxicity of early-life arsenic exposure
Sammanfattning : Arsenic exposure, mainly via drinking water and certain food, is a major public health concern because of its association with various types of cancers and other non-cancer adverse health effects. Worldwide, more than one hundred million people are exposed to elevated levels of arsenic on a regular basis. LÄS MER
